Toyota manual to auto conversion :?)

After being the unfortunate victim of a work accident a year ago (long story short - I was the brake for a falling 100kg metal cage) I'm still experiencing problems from the injuries sustained. In particular, my left leg is constantly in pain, which can make driving my manual car a bit difficult at times.
So as I don't know how much longer it'll be until this leg heals, I'm starting to look at maybe losing the clutch & converting my current "A to B" car to an auto.
It's not a flash car, but it's cheap on fuel & great for general running around so I'd prefer to keep it for now instead of wasting the money on the purchase of a new day car. (Besides, gotta save that money for more important things - like buying a Z! ;) )Just wondering if anyone knows how easy or difficult it might be to do a conversion on my car & if it'll be very expensive? Also, would this model require a CPU?
It's a Toyota Corolla 1984 Sedan with a KE70 engine.Any knowledge or advice would be greatly appreciated! =)

    Ring up a wrecker...>>

....they may do an exchange deal, may even fit it for you. I wouldnt pay any more than $400 for a motor/Transmission combination on its own. I dont think this model has an engine management system. Regards GT

    Blipman Beer hooves totally work

    I believe there are systems

which allow disabled people to drive a manual... the clutch is activated via a button on the gear knob.... have you looked into this?Ben

You could hire me as your driver :)

I only charge $50/hr which includes a door to door service :)Can you sense that I'm sick of my current job.

Perhaps we could make a tech-day out of it?

If you locate the Autobox, we could have a go installing it. Can't be that hard.As K-Zed would say, we'll fix it or f**k it...Who's up for the challenge?:YD

    Hey! I'm not disabled!!!

I'm a perfectly functioning chick & I still get around in my mini skirts & stiletto heels (that probably does a lot of good for my leg...lol).
I can still do everything, just using the clutch is painful. Ok, so you probably weren't saying I'm disabled...hehee.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I think using a disabled system would be a bit of a hurt to the ol' ego..! 8( I'd really prefer the usual system. If I find a solution I like with converting to auto I plan to use it for a while & convert back to the manual gearbox as soon as the leg isn't painful anymore. I'm a bit partial to my manual gearbox... it's a nice one to drive! :YD

Ah well, if it all went to hell...

I could always use Captain Mark's new Zed as my day car! ;)
Just joking Cap'! It's too special for that!

    That's good...if it doesn't require a CPU...

...then it should make for a fairly cheap conversion. Will have to make some calls around my local wreckers.

    I've done a couple of auto->manual

conversions. One in a skyline and the other a LC Torana before and both were easy. Going back the other way should be easier since you are not stuffing around with installing the clutch pedal. Just need the gearbox, tailshaft, flexplate, gearknob, gearbox oil, kickdown cable etc. Should only be a days work.

Cheers for the support everyone...! :YD

I'm gunna do a bit of ringing around wreckers etc from the office this week to see what's available & hopefully get an estimate of price ranges etc. It'll be dependant on how much they want for it all too as to how soon I can get it done - and Captain Mark & me just blew up my Alpine head unit today when we took it out of my car & put it in his Z (think the connectors were wrong & we didn't pay attention) so it'll cost a bit in getting that sent away & fixed tomorrow. (We'll certainly be paying more attention to that next time!!!)I'll post my findings next week once I get some ideas on availability & price from the wreckers! Thanks all!

Done a bit of ringing around wreckers today

Seems I've got one of those cars that's difficult to get everything for. (It's one of those 'in between' models).Alljap & a few others like them didn't have any transmissions. The most promising so far has been a wreckers at Narangba who seem to think they may have an auto box & the other parts I need, although by the way he was talking I think he's actually got the model all wrong. Whatever the case, they're asking around $400 for it. Might drop in there & see what he's got next weekend if I get a chance.A plus for Zedders though - there's a full silver Z at Capalaba Japanese Wreckers at the moment. I believe it's a twin turbo, targa roof & I 'think' it's a 2+2. Might wanna give 'em a call guys!

My Dad is actually a mechanic

(Or diesel fitter to be precise) So he could do the job himself I'm sure, it's just a case of him finding the time to come up & visit me & get it done sometime if I have to go thru with it.
