    please.
I have 2 HDD's in my pc. One is 20Gb but has been partitioned. 2gb and 18 gb I was working on a web page using netscape and saving it to the 18gb partition. Anyway was called away so saved my work. came back about 3 min later to find the pc had locked up. (Near new pc, WinXP pro)Couldn't do anything with it so had to hit the reset button. Once it had rebooted the partion I was using has had the name deleleted and is now unaccessable. Error message say the drive needs to be formated. Do a check on properties and it says the file system is "RAW" and that there is 0 bytes of used space and 0 bytes of free space. had a look using good old DOS and it says the file system is not std or something to that effect.
Now I have been really really slack and haven't backed up the files for a long time. I would really like to try and find out what has caused this and if I can recover the data.
Can anyone offer some advice please? Is there some software that I can get that will allow me to recover the data?
    thanks in advance

Say bye bye to your data.

There certainly is a program you can get, I believe its used by the FBI and costs a few mill, if you create a partition you have to reboot to bring the partition into effect, If it is RAW now, you will need to do a format of the hdd to allow the introduction of any kind of data, if the computer says there is no data on the machine, then there is no data on the machine.

How are you with disk editors Peter?

know what the partition table supposed to look like? I only know W2k/NT, s'pose it's the same if it's formated NTFS, or was it FAT. Can be rebuilt with a fair bit of stuffing around. Sorry, questions questions.......Good luck Peter

Just makes a clicking noise every few seconds.I dunno if its possible to take it to a shop and at least get the data copied onto another HDD.Dont know about your problem though. Not much of a computer wiz :s

    Call me

will see what can be done.
Do you have WinXP install CD or were you provided with a "DISK-IMAGE" CD :?) When say you have 2 HDD do you mean 1 HHD with 2 partitions or TWO physically different hard-disks :?)Type of PC; generic-no-name, brand-name (compaq-hp-dell-ibm), laptop-desktop :?)Note: I am going away for weekend, but call me and we will see what we can do

    Update, all is not lost

Had a look at some pc mags at the papershop today. The november Australian PC world had a program called "PC Inspector File Recovery" on it. To "recover files that have been deleted from your pc" So I bought it on the off chance that it might be of some help to me. AS it turns out it also allows you to recover files that have bee lost because of a system crash etc. Only on Fat drives though not NTFS.
Its taken some time but Am well on the way to recovering most of my lost files. Have already got the most important ones, now working on the not so important ones. Takes some time because everynow and then the program comes across a bad error and locks up. Have to then restart it and scan the bad drive again. This is taking about 35 mins each time. Could speed it up I think if da taken note of the cluster numbers but I don't know enough about it to stuff around too much.
For the price of the mag, $7.50 I think I've got out of this pretty cheaply. Might even start backing up all my importanat stuff.regards
