I have pulled my engine as I had plans for new or rebuilt turbos, because she smokes a bit on start up. Not heaps tho. So I found exedy clutch was stuffed along with a few other parts so it was needed anyway. So here is my question. My turbos have ZERO play in the shaft in any direction. They are perfect and there is no oil/carbon on the turbine wheel. do you think I should just replace the seals or do the whole turbo rebuild. I bought the rebuild kits so they are there anyways. Would love to go bigger but I have to get the front fixed at the body shop so that is where that money is going. cheers for your time Parker
not to get you worried, but have you done a compression test? maybe rings are worn. a lot of stuff worth doing while the engine out save some money in the end.
compression lowest cyl compression was 145psi. as for valve stem seals that was the other thing I thought it might be. The engine is beautiful. runs well smooth and has never had any probs since i did the first big service (T BELT ETC). She is very healthy 253rwkw. it has 68,000 on it. I have owned it for 5yrs and only put 10,000 on it. But yes they may not be original but the car is in mint. the interior looks like it's never been used so they could be orig. The only prob it has is smoke for about a min on start up. And I changed the PCV's and that reduced it to almost nothing. so I am out of ideas. thats what you guys are here for
what exhaust have you got fitted? if after market twin. has it got a balance pipe fitted, or x pipe. if not could cause some smoke on idle. explained in this post. http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=273457&highlight=smoke+on+idle but smoke for only a short time on start up does sound more like stem seals.
exhaust Was stock when I bought it..no smoke. Then changed it to twin 2.5" from cat back, had not noticed smoke until about 6months after that. Now fitted with complete 2.5" system, no difference in smoke output. Yes there is a balance pipe. Thanks for your help so far guys. Might purchase some valve seals and install just to be safe....I want to drive the thing again
cold mornings I wish that were the case. But it will do it when the weather is warm to. 40c in the middle of summer.
mmm... well if its not piston rings. not turbos. doesn't sound like its too big of an issue... at least not something thats gonna cause damage (as far as i can see). Hope you get it sorted. goodluck!... nothing better then having a running zed... I am in the same boat.. engine out. Gah.
