Before i go and borrow a set of ratchet spanners from a mate is it possible to remove the thermo housing without removing the drivers side head?

There's that annoying bolt under there and i wasn't sure if you could unthread it enough for removal...

Are you referring to the thermostat housing in the coolant hard pipes?

Nah the one that goes to the block that houses the thermo and the back pipe bolts too.

Doesn't matter now, got it off, needed long fingers and a 12mm ratchet spanner.

    OK! You've lost me.
Just where and what are you referring to?
I only know of one Thermostat and it lives between the Coolant Hard-pipes, front centre of the engine block(as gmbrezzo suggested).:zlove:

Just need to remove the lower plenum.

We normally install it after both heads when assembling an engine.

Correct, kinda. There is only one thermostat.
The housing resides behind it which bolts to the block, and the hard pipe is infront.

Lower plenum off, heads can probably stay

Only did this recently as mine started leaking. Once lower plenum is off the bolt closest to the D/S Head best to be removed with a ratchet ring spanner. Using a standard spanner will take about an hour to under and to tighten up.

So to answer your question, no the heads do not need to be removed.

I swear people only read the last post. Check the third one. :)

It can be done cause I did it. Bastard job but fine ratchet spanners get it done.

BTW, why do you want to do this? Unless the block to housing seal has let go there is no point

So while the engines out, and I'm replacing every single little gasket on it, if the housings not leaking don't fix?

Preventions better than cure.... And that looks like a bastard to cure with engine together.

In short I'm doing the job right. :)

At the risk of sounding slightly pedantic, if the housing is NOT leaking, then you have nothing to "fix"(replace?, maybe, fix? don't think so).
If it makes you feel more secure and confident, replace it.:zlove:

Hmmmm to replace a near 20 year old silicon seal, or to not....

Everything's come apart and been 2000 grit and put back together with locktite blue maxx.

Knowing that everything has been redone is peace of mind.

I'm glad I'm the one working on my engine and not you Chilli.
Going off your "its not broke don't fix theory" I bet it grinds your gears knowing I'm taking out
16 perfectly good welsh plugs and replacing them. Wait, don't wanna upset the masses, "freeze plugs"

I've spent a lot of time under cars, I'd like most of my time in the zed to behind the wheel.

Well, my engine has been running trouble-free for about nine years(since I did my rebuild And replaced ALL gaskets/seals/hoses/clamps etc.). It should be noted that NONE of these items needed 'fixing'(just replacing with new bits).
I also am glad that I am "not working on your engine". so we have something in common.:zlove:
BTW, it was Tekky who suggested it was not worth doing if it wasn't leaking, not I(so I hope your 'attention to detail' in repairing your car is more precise than your reading skills would seem to indicate).:p:zlove::br:

If its an engine rebuild then sure DO it.

If the engine is in car DONT do it as a preventable measure. Not worth it.
