Before taking the plunge and getting anything welded, i was thinking about taking the spoiler off the car and seeing what it looks like. Is there an easy way to plug up the exposed holes, maybe via some rubber grommets or something?? for reference its a 97 z with the factory spoiler (seperate from the 3rd brake light)
i say just go for it. 2 seaters really do look better without the rear wing. especially the later models with the wing seperate from the 3rd brake light. it just doesn't do it for me. i wouldn't miss it.
I dunno dude... 300zx's look better with a wing IMHO. Post a pic of your sex machine (ie. your car). End of the day it comes down to you, you're the one that has to be happy with it. You can use masking tape to cover the holes if you're after a temporary fix. Be sure before you tackle anything. Getting the wing off is one thing, putting it back on is another.
'97, late model goodness, where did you find that one?? I found my spoiler very hard to remove, I completely stuffed the clips and managed to rip the spoiler into a few peices You might want to make your mind up first about if you really want it. Make sure you have your 3rd brake light infill panel too, otherwise you will have a big ugle hole in your boot...
every time i see that spoiler i hate it but i am a bit leery of making permanent changes that involve welding!! heres a pic of the spoiler i'm talking about: just to make sure i have this right.. if i do a full brazillian, i need to get the holes welded up, then the back hatch panel resprayed right? whats the going rate for that??
Thats the spoiler I am looking for to fit to my zed when I remove my factory one, I like them. Wanna sell it?? Fran
Found the z being sold by a guy in sydney. Its late model- but stock, so i have a few mods to do yet. I'm currently hiding from the wheel police till i can scrape a few $ together!! Not sure whether to do the brazillian now or wait till new wheels arrive. how is that spoiler (pictured) held on? is it just 4 screws holding it in place?
i'm not sure how the wing is held on for the later models. however, there's a lot less involved when removing the late model wings as opposed to early models which needs the rear garnish, 3rd brake light and a fresh coat of paint to match. most get the brazilian professionally done by a body shop. the holes will need to be filled in and painted over at the very least. P.S. go for it dude, that wing is hideous.
6 bolts, 3 on each side so you're going to end up with 6 holes on your tailgate. It's not that difficult to remove.
thanks for the info guys. I think i'll go get some quotes from body shops. what's the going rate for this kind've job?? it'd be nice to have some kind've guideline so i know if they're trying to rip me off
From memory I paid about $400 for the holes to be filled and the hatch resprayed. The repaint wasn't entirely pleasing though. I would consider leaving the wing unless it really pisses you off. I mostly removed mine because it was rusting to death.
Nothing too crazy .. Unfortunately car is NA not TT First priority was to make sure its healthy. I've had it inspected & serviced and fixed a couple of things (e.g. AFM), and i'm pretty confident the engine is in good shape. Now i want to improve the looks, meaning: - new rims - brazillian - 2000 spec tail lights - window tinting - glowing '300zx' on rear center panel - *maybe* side skirts So yeah when i say "mods" i'm not thinking of doing serious engine work. i don't think performance mods are worth it on an NA. I'd LOVE to do a NA->TT conversion but for what it would cost me i could buy a second Z !!!!!
If you really want a TT, then I'd suggest you sell the 97 Z before you start modifying it. It should fetch a decent price and you could purchase a nice TT for what you should get for it. If you are not worried about boost, then good luck with the mods. Sounds like some very tasteful mods there. Only thing with sideskirts is that kind of need a new front bar to join otherwise the sides are lower than the rest of the car. Good luck.
