just a quick question for you zed gurus what temperature should a stock zed TT without a fan shroud operate at?
The radiator will basically act like it has no fan, without the shroud the fan is drawing air from everywhere rather than from the radiator only. Engine will keep cool in highway driving but as soon as you stop in traffic good luck on not cooking the engine.
In theory i agree, but the zed engine bay is so confined the fan really has no other choice but to pull air through the radiator. There are a few zeds getting around with no shrouds and as yet havent overheated, although they do run 5-10deg hotter.
If your clutch fan is working properly the shroud will make a noticeable difference, but you may only ever see it while reading data through the likes of datascan/conzult. The variation that you'll see may not be enough to make the temp needle move, even if you are at boiling point. Certainly while the "ram air" effect is taking place there will be no difference, but when stopped or moving slowly in traffic, that's when temps will move northward. You are more likely to blow hoses etc, and your hoses are likely to have a shorter lifespan if you are constantly running excessively hot. With regard to the lower shroud, you can make the lower shroud using plastic garden edging. Just cut to shape with a Stanley knife. They are near impossible to get from wreckers, and Nissan want 2 arms and a leg to sell you one. Make it yourself for a few $$$
i recently got the ecu talk device and that shows me a good indication of temperature on a 25degree day it gets to around 95 without a fan shroud so with one i should stay well under 90... i purchased a complete fan shroud set however it was for a N/A is anyone up for either a swap or selling an upper for a TT? is there anything else i can do 2 lower the temp especially with summer coming up i want a nice cool engine
Make sure you use the correct coolant %, inspect the radiator for defected fins rust etc, make sure the waterpump and thermostat is up to date and that the fan clutch works. Don't forget to turn the heater core on hot, that will cool the motor down especially on a hot summers day with the windows up.
My NA used to run at 90-95deg without the lower fan shroud or undertrays and peaked one day at 103deg (ambient 35deg, on a long uphill grind at 110kph (Eastern Fwy out of Adelaide) OEM temp guage didn't move off middle). This episode convinced me to replace the undertrays and put the lower shroud back on. It now runs at 80deg (winter), 85deg (summer) regardless of roads and loads.
