The tailshaft is in 2 pieces. Where they join has to be held to the car somehow.

That's where the centre bearing comes in.

I just bought a new one. Cost me $88 delivered from EBay. I haven't installed it yet.

    Yeah

Usually it's the rubber surround that contains the bearing that perishes and allows the bearing to "slop" around in the housing. jack the car up safely so you can see and grab the tail shaft. and shake it side to side up and down. You should see where the damage is. Otherwise the bearing might just be shot. Put it in neutral and spin it by hand. If it grinds and feels like sand. It's stuffed

be careful, do some research, by way of noticing it ? maybe a vibration felt through the floor seat, had same problem got new centre bearing fitted it which then required the entire shaft be rebalanced still not right as the universal joints were tired too long story short ended up having a one peice tail shaft made up all problems diappeared moral of story if possible drop the shaft first, take it to somebody who knows about them good luck pm me if you want some more info tekkie and the boys were a great help to me

Before you disconnect the shaft halves, use a permanent marker to mark where the two pieces line up. That way, when it goes back together it's already balanced. :) (They are balanced in the factory)

    Abdul,
it's obvious that you don't know very much about the mechanical side of owning a 300ZX, so please don't try doing this without experienced help. You will be much better off taking it to a reliable workshop and getting it done properly.
For instance, I'll bet you don't know that if you pull the tailshaft out, all the gearbox oil will run out onto the floor(something you learn by accident the first time you try to do it).

Abdul, as it is my car you are talking about i know what you are talking about, the centre bearing was not there when i sold it to the previous owner, and the tailshaft was flopping around, on take off there was a significant knock from the rear, you would notice it, it was not subtle.

I am still looking for my mods list to give to you, so you know what was done to the car

1 piece tailshaft is the way to go. by the time you screw around replacing the bearing you will probably find that the uni joints are stuffed.
