quick question. does a z go into safety boost mode if it blows a turbo?
and what sort of synptoms would a blown turbo exhibit aside from blue smoke.

No the ECU won't go into safe mode due to a blown turbo.

ok. i know that the EGR connection to the mainifold blew it's bung out tonight and the exhaust is freaking loud. I am freaking out that the turbo might be blown as it was boosting when the bung blew. heard a loud woosh then it's just been loud and rattly. hence the concern for the turbo. the car is still making what feels like the same ammount of boost prior to the bung blowing out but still want to know if the turbo is blown.

The term "blown turbo" is normally associated with a leaking oil seal inside of the turbo. When this happens, you get fluffy white smoke out the exhaust. Most of the time, a leaking turbo seal will leak when the engine is boosting, and when at idle.
A blown turbo seal will not cause any difference in noise.

What is this "bung" you're mentioning(I thought you were having the troublesome "tack-welded" nut, welded up to seal it permanently)?

Until you resolve the hole in the manifold, you cannot accurately gauge the condition of the turbo(without removing it from the car).

got a guy to come round thismorning to remove that EGR nut. seemed to have a poor thread in it thats why they tack welded it. so when i fit the new one (i am going down to bunnings shortly to see if they have what i need.) i'll update this post. just from the noiae i was concerned that the turbo mght have seized but the power levels were the same just a shitload more exhaust noise.

Hopefully you won't have any long-term problems, once you replace that nut.:zlove:

here's hoping. does anyone know what the thread sizing of that nut is? so when i go to bunnings they can get me the right bolt.

Bunnings wnot have anything to fit that. Pirtek or Enzed would be a better bet. They are 22x1.0 thread pitch I think.

Well bunnings did have the right stuff. had to get a fitting from plumbing then a bolt to put inside the fitting a quck attack with locktite on the bolt and about 30 mins screwing the fitting into the exhaust manifold and tada no more tractor exhaust, car is now boosting fine and even had to turn the boost down as there are now no vac / boost leaks (touch wood). turbos are fine. so paranoia is over but still good to know the symptoms.
