Sent the z in for a service and to get them to check the erratic idle problem it has had and maybe have a look at why it is running a bit rich...

Get a phone call a few hours later asking me if i have ever had any starting issues with it before. I tell the mechanic no it starts first go every go, and he tells me that since they did the service the thing wont start anymore but they will look into it....

Get a phone call today saying that they have had it running and they think they have found the problem - the plugs on the injectors are corroded and will need to be replaced, and resoldered on, i will need reconditioned injectors, and it will take them ages to do the work - because it is a Z...

Total cost has blown out from a $100 service to now being $1000. And HOPEFULLY this will be the cause of the problem of the idling and the running rich.... HOPEFULLY.

Question is - am i being ripped?? How much are injectors for Z's normally or even to get them recon'd? I know it cant be hard to source some plugs for it and even i reckon i could weld the stupid things on if i had to.... I just cant quite figure where all the $$ are going and what on. Ive heard ppl say that mechanics jack the prices up with Z's coz they are hard to work on, but if a $100 service is going to blow out into a $1000 hopeful fix every time then you might be seeing a nice little TT red Z on the market soon :(

    Rebuilding injectors costs approx

$25 give or take. I just had mine flow tested etc & they were $30 each. One of mine was in real bad shape, & I had to get another one.

Doesn't sound like you're being ripped to me. Plenum needs to be pulled to do the work (time consuming).

Alot of the cost would be in the plenum removal, which is a necessary evil.
It may be worth the effort to have all the relevant hoses replaced, etc.

    Injector

connectors cost about $60, injector clean and test is about $180, Its a fairly simple job! you could quite easily replace the inj connectors yourself, removing the plenum to pull the fuel rail is a harder, its not recomended unless your more that handy around engines, and have the proper tools. Your mechanic will have to remove the plenum to get to the injectors, this is where most of your grand is spent! on his labour.:(

Dude I have a really good set of injectors for sale, connectors are all nice and clean, they were cleaned, leak tested and flow tested about 1000kms ago and have all new O-rings. I'll PM the price to you might be cheaper than the reco

    DUDE!

Do the Plenum Pull yourself. Sure it will take a bit longer but mate, you'll do a better job. If you do,

    PCV Hoses ~$100
    Throttle Body Bypass ~ $15
Lower and upper injector insulators ~ $100
    Injectors cleaned ~ $150-160
    Replace PCV Valves ~$40?
    Clean AAC/IAA Unit ~ Free
Replace and resolder connectors ~$5 bucks each
    Replace Fuel Lines ~$20 repco

Those prices are rough but lets say you could do it for ~$500 bucks if you did it yourself. Ask your mechanic EXACTLY what you get for your $1000. That's a lot of farking money mate. 1/10 of the price of some 300zx for sale.

Remember the Plenum gasket will need to be replaced, ~$25 from Nissan

If you are in Canberra I can give you a hand.
