Stock vs Tastefully Modded

Discussion in 'Non Technical' started by FatChickThriller, Feb 12, 2015.

  1. I have a '95 AUDM 300zx 2+2, velour interior, T-top, NA, 229,000km on the clock. Everything is completely stock, besides the USDM side indicators (I have the AUDM ones, just haven't fitted), wheels (have the stocks, just not fitted) and shocks.

With respect to resale price, how much do you think keeping it completely stock will affect resale price? I see the '95 fetches more than your average '90 model, but not by that match. Having said that, coming across a completely stock z32 is becoming harder and harder to find.

I would like to change my front bar, side skirts, and rear lights to the UAS equivalents. But at the same time, I see how "rare" the '95 model is and it feels kinda wrong changing it.

What do you guys think? Am I just obsessing over nothing?

I think keeping it stock with oem oarts will always be of benefit when selling a vehicle, but ultimately you should enjoy the car how you want, if you like the UAS bar, then change it, you can always change it back if you wish to resell in the future.

Its like people who only go for runs a few times per year with their vehicles (not neccesarily zed owners) I can never understand the mentality of keeping it in perfect condition by not driving it, that's like not rooting your missus because you want to save her for TE next bloke. Cars are meant to be enjoyed

If the k's were low, then keep it stock for the soul reason of getting maximum if you sell. But that isn't the case for yours, do as you want... don't keep it stock just for the reason to possibly get more when you sell.
My car is rare, but I have no desire to keep it stock. Tasteful mods though, no ebay bullsh!t :)

    Resale price..

I think stock examples will always fetch a better price. But I would have no qualms buying a tastefully modded Zed that is done correctly, no corner cutting and with decent products.

The car is yours, and hence you need to do with it what you want to enjoy it. its a mistake buying a toy car and then thinking about resale prices. Enjoy it and drive it.

As an example. I bought my TT complete stock in 2011. It is now modded to how I like it to be and would not change a thing. I don't dream of ever selling my car as I like it too much and don't expect to get rich from selling it anyway.

    Cheers

  5. Yeah, that pretty much confirms everything I was thinking.

So where should I buy my body work from? RGSperformance? uniqueautosports? or perhaps elsewhere?

That will all depend on who has the best deal on the day, work out what you want to do too your car, how much your budget is. Then look at who has the best prices for what your after, remember sometimes you may need to buy from overseas ie: coz, z1, etc .

At the end of the day it all boils down too what YOU WANT, and how it looks that is important, not what everyone else tells you it should.

  7. Budget isn't usually a word that comes into play often with my plans. I'd prefer to buy what's right rather than what's conveniently priced. I am torn between the UAS 2k bumpers (all round), or one of the TwinZ bumpers (all round). The UAS keeps the 300zx look. The TwinZ makes it look like something else. I am siding with the UAS atm.

I have bought a whole bunch of gear from CZP, and have chatted with Coz, who is very knowledgeable and helpful. They have an unreal range. Problem is shipping costs.

I'd prefer to buy within Aus if I can, but if I have to, I am happy to import.

With the aussie dollar coping a hammering as of late, yes it is pricey on importing, but also at times necessary as some of our local people do not have certain things . Sometimes the way too keep shipping costs down is too group buy or organize several people at once and split the shipping.

I totally agree with the "enjoy YOUR car sentiment".

Cars don't actually depreciate at all EVER.....until the day you sell them ;)

That said, what I do like almost as equally as a well kept stock car (which is only a recent obsession by the way) is a well modified car.

I've seen some really nice Z32's here in WA that are modded with very little impact on the original lines.

Let's call them "face lifts" rather than modifications.

I have much respect for that kind of thing.

OR you could ask yourself "how close is this car to the modded version in my mind"
then have a look at what someone else is offering for sale.

eg, If you want a Zed with much quicker handling then your 2+2 is the second best compared to the shorter wheelbase 2+0, you would be spending more to achieve the same.

I agree with everyone about enjoying your car is the first priority. Zeds are cheap enough that if you have the extra driveway/garage get another one to enjoy for the mods.

    Said everyone in the 1950s.

I've only ever modified 1 car in my ownership. Every other vehicle I have kept stock, or improved with oem parts.

End of the day if you own a car for resale, then you simply shouldn't be driving it.
If you own a car to enjoy it, then go at it however you wish. Stock, modified or 'improved'.

    That's tasteful imho

Oh how Ironic that I chose to buy a Z with 3/4 veildside and 1/4 ABFlug lol

THose were the days, and at the time that's what I "wanted".

I still recall that at the same time, I was torn between the "modified" car I purchased, and a rock stock black 2+2 with cream leather interior (without rips)

Time machine anyone? So many decisions I need to change lol

Of course lets not forget that I SWORE I'd never modify my 350Z

And it ended up like this

Rollin is on the money. With 230,000k's on the odo it is irrelevant... This isn't a 275GTB we're talking about.

If it had 30,000k's on it then yes it may make a difference.

Do what makes you happy. If you want a car as an investment you are barking up the wrong tree :p

Thank you very much ugame, I am very proud of my achievement with my Z, I have done as much as I can to make my Z the best Series 6 (2kspec) replica in Australia and hopefully the world and it includes parts from the 2kspec Z32, the USDM Z32 and USDM Stillen 25th anniversary Z32 and the UKDM/ADM Z32 to make a best of best optioned Z32 every conceived in NA form;).
