Steering heavy after HICAS "removal"

    Hi All,

So my steering is heavier than it was before I "removed" my HICAS.

I have "removed" in inverted commas as this is what I did:

    1. remove rear hicas solonoid and install lock out bar

    2. remove solonoid from engine bay and all hicas lines that go along K frame and under the engine

    3. cut the banjo fitting off the hose that goes to the back of the tt powersteering pump and used to connect to the HICAS solonoid

    4. connect this hose from the pump back into the powersteering reservoir.

Now I know that people change to N/A pump but I found a tech article where what I did was done instead. I also know that there is an article in our tech section where you remove a spring etc from back of the pump?

So can anyone shed any light on why doing the above would cause my steering to become heavier? Its not heavy like it has no fluid in it but it certainly is heavier than it used to be.

    Cheers,

    Adam

Yes this is what I've done but I simply cut the banjo off and used some p/s hose and some heavy duty clamps to join it onto the reservoir.

Have you done this personally? Did you experience any heavier steering afterwards?

that fitting pic is off my car ..my steering was perfect and I also had underdrive crank pulley slowing it down as well..

    what do you mean by
    4. connect this hose from the pump back into the powersteering reservoir?

Exact same as what you have done except I cut the banjo and connected to the reservoir with a hose:

What you say you have done is exactly what I did to my track car and it works perfectly. This all looks good to me.

Okay thanks, maybe its something stupid like too much fluid or something, I'll look into it.

    Take the

control valve and spring out of the pump body, like mattb did in the teck article.

What does the control valve and spring do? My engine is back in obviously so I don't wanna be doing something hard like that with no change!

I did see the tech article but didn't understand the reason why..

There also a plug on the steering rack underneath the power steering pump area you may have bumped it or unpluged it or spilt fluid in it give it a clean cause
that causes steering to go heavy

On this picture the two pin plug .

Hi ,my name is jeff,i bought a 300zx t/t 3 months ago and have also done this mod as my hicas was playing up anyway -great forum by the way

Seeing the rear hicas is no longer used and is blocked off at the back, can you just block the extra pipe coming from the p/s ressy ,pull the spring and plunger out of the pump weld up the banjo fitting and just put the bolt back in the p/s pump
Im guessing this would make it just like a n/a pump and you wont need to feed the extra hose back to the ressy from the pump ?

Im new to all this hicas stuff,i have done what the original poster has done,im just thinking i would be eliminating an extra hose doing it this way

I stripped down my TT pump, de-vaned it and took out the spring etc.

I then put a 'bung' in the unused hole in the pump. Works perfectly...

your embarrassment is someones happiness.. ;)

now that we know that , he plugged in the power steering computer .. and the front steering has come good, well that tells me that the 2 solenoids that connected the the power steering rack , must be an on of switch , ( more oil less oil ) , so this is also telling me that this has to do something with the power steering going hard ,( or harder ) so that computer DOES have something to do with the front wheels as well ..

i tried devaning my pump years ago. left the steering heavy. ended up just switching to the full NA gear works a treat plus the pump is lighter aswell :D

ok im going to put this to the test ,,

im going to put 12 volts in the solenoids and see what happens , i do not have that ( power steering computer in my car nor do i have hi cas )

when i power the solenoid up and the steering goes lighter then great , we found something out , if there is no change i will power up the other solenoid and see what happens , if nothing then SHIT , then what im going to do is power up both of them and see if this makes any difference , i think it will , those switchers must be on and of ,,

yeah i am running a NA set up as well but for the life of me , i feel that its heavy , i did this so long ago that i really don't remember how it was years ago , when i had it all stock .. but as its stands , mine is heavy then what i would call normal . so i'm going out there now , bracket is coming over so we can give this a go , just to see what happens ,, i may come up with something for all of us , or at the end i get nothing out of it ,, time will tell ,,
