Hey peoples, I drove the zed a few days ago, no dramas, but hopped in it this morning and it won't turn over. When I turn the ignition to start, I hear a rapid metallic ratchetting-like noise, which suggest to me the starter motor might have died? I'm not really that mechanically minded, (I know, bad profile for a Zed-owner!) so does this sound likely? Shane
This happenned to me This happenned to me 4 months ago. It cost me $650 for a new one (including installation). I'm no expert mechanic but the sound you mention seems similar. I'm told you can reverse the plates inside the starter motor incase one end is dirty (or hit it with a hammer to loosen any dirt build up) but get advice from someone more experienced than me before doing these I reckon.
hit it ? hit it with a hammer ,interesting,i say take it off and have a look at it,all else fails, smash it with a hammer lol ,actually get it rebuilt
Stop; Hammer-time That seems to be good advice; I found a thread with guys talking about this, so I've been looking under the drivers wheel, but it's not obvious to me exactly what I should be hitting. I can see the oil filter and a solenoid that looks to me to be part of the steering, maybe hicas. Anyone able to provide a picture for me? And say it's knackered, is it a relatively easy thing to remove and replace once you've jacked the car up? S.
Not %100 sure but... Stereo and other electronics seem to be okay...I might put it on the charger overnight and see if that makes a difference before I get too spanner happy.
Id be doing the same, check the battery and all the connections, including the starter, when they say hit it with a hammer.. tap the solenoid, always worked on the HQ...
mate.. I found a second hand starter from another member for 20 bucks. + 30 for shipping, they are heavy. Here is a pic of the starter location. The bracket on mine snapped and it was hanging on by the main battery wire. In this pic it is hanging but will give you an idea of the location. It is attached by 2 bolts. Quite easy to remove if you drive your car up onto some ramps. To find rebuild instructions, look under electrical in the FSM.
i knew i sold it to cheap....lol just kidding, was useless to me......glad it was able to help another member.... if you do need a new one then try people wrecking zeds near you, should be able to get one cheap-ish
Plates in a starter motor??? It's a starter motor, not a bloody dishwasher. The clicking noise is the solenoid(probably a flat battery).
