Hey Everyone. This morning i went to start my car and its got nothing....I turn the key and get reds and i know its not the battery because that went flat only last week. If i turn the key past the reds to start the car i get nothing, a really faint click can be heard from down near the fuse box in the drivers side foot well and thats about it... Could it be the relay thats located inside the drivers side guard thats buggered? (or is that what the faint clicking i can hear is...even though it sounds like its in the car) OR could the starter motor have sh!t itself you think? I noticed the last time that i started the car (last night) the starter motor had a bit of a funny sound to it, and i actually thought to myself something might have been wrong there. Anyone experienced anything like this before? Thanks Heaps (as always) Josh
Oops hahaha forgot to mention that...yeah the battery went flat last week and i replaced it with a brand spankin new one
Maybe you put a new battery in but didnt fix what made the first battery flat. Its being drained by something. This is classic dead battery syndrome
best way to check Is there any way using a multimeter i can check to see if thats what it is or just swap it out for another one? The cd player i have in the car is readin at about 12.6v (its got a volt meter on it) Damn Z ...haha i had it for 2.5 years and never a problem...in the past 2 weeks..nothing but drama afta drama (although it was my fault i hit another car in it..boooo) Thanks for the help on this guys...sounds like i should be checkin the battery when i get home tonight.
Measure the voltage at the battery with a multi metre. What does it say? Try starting the car and see what the voltage drops to whilst cranking, how does that go? To check for a current draw you need to measure the current (so you'll need to change the setting on your MM) passing between your -ve terminal and your -ve battery post when everything is switched off. Let us know how you go.
Unlikely if car hasn't stopped while running. Also unlikely if batter is showing static voltage of 12.6, but this shoud be checked with a multi metre. To check your alternator just put a meter across while the car is running, you want 13.5-15v. Test at 1500rpm with headlights on.
Car was running fine, i could clutch start it also and drive it fine home from my girlfriends place. Will clutch it again tonight and check the alternator as you mentioned as well as the drain on the battery.
i had the same problem with mine 2 nights ago. my mechanic told me it was the battery. i bought a new battery and still nothing. i then jacked the car up to see a loose wire dangling. turned out it was the wire off the starter motor.. it must have fallen off or some thing. i plugged her in and bang the car started straight up lol
You can check for voltage drop across terminals (indicating poor connection) by turning on your headlights or other load, put the positive lead of your multi meter on the terminal, and the negative on your battery post. Do this on both sides. .05v is acceptable but you shouldn't see any reading at all.
funny you say that, first time i put my zed on the hoist i noticed the main power wire to the starter, the nut was only hanging on by 2 threads
Found out the problem I found out the problem. The starter motor as snapped off... Will have to take a photo but basically the bold that goes through the starter motor houseing is still stuck the bellhouseing and the starter is just dangling in there. Dont know what happened to the other bold that holds it in... Spewing...so yeah...as posted in the wanted section. Anyone got a second hand starter motor they would like to sell working or one that doesn't that i can swap my good bits into the houseing of? Thanks Josh
I have a good second hand Starter for a TT. PM me BTW this is far from uncommon. I have replaced a few tranny's for people. Two of them had the bolt hole stripped out. I had to recoil them before i could use them
