Hi guys, I'm trying to diagnose an issue where my 1989 z32 TT won't start. It's been over a year since it last started, finally finished replacing the suspension as it was long gone, cleaned and tightened all the electrical connectors under the hood and flushed the fuel system and she ran fine for about half an hour. Reversed it out of the driveway and got 5 meters down the road where it stalled out. Swapped the PTU with a known working one (s2) as the one that was in there was smoking hot, figured this was the issue as it started up again, closed the bonnet and died as I did so, checked the PTU and it was very hot again! Stripped back the wiring to the PTU and there's no issues there but then I noticed that the ground connectors at the rear of the engine were both loose. Is it possible that this caused me to fry both PTU's and this is why I'm not getting any spark? Unfortunately I don't have another one to test. Thanks : )
I figured as much, really should have known better and checked them first but it's been so long since I've touched a Z. I had prepped the engine for a plenum pull and must have left them loose after I labelled everything. Doh! Looks like i'm going to have to find another one.
I will confirm that as well - just be aware the ECU could also be damaged besides the PTU - hope its not but just be aware of it. I will cross my fingers for you! Goodluck
You guys have said it all. Hopefully just replacing the PTU after tightening earths and it will be fine, but there is a lot of forum members who have fried their ECU's from exactly this.
Just incase someone comes across this thread and has a similar problem, loose ground connections DO kill your PTU. Clean and tighten both of the grounds at the rear of the plenum and install a new PTU and it'll be running again (so long as you don't have any other problems). : )
