Speedo going allover the place

    Hi guys
My speedo is reading all sorts of figures. As when I am doing 40kmh it reads 80kmh, and when I do 100kmh on freeway it reads 180 or sometimes 140kmh.

I have got my ecutalk for now to show me the right figures. But it's annoying when I am doing 60 kmh and alarm goes on because the speedo is reading 110kmh.

    Sometimes it reads OK.

Any thoughts or advice from you knowledgeable people.

    Thanks

I would say Speedo cluster itself. From what I remember the speed signal goes to the cluster then to the ecm

Speed sensor is possible but wouldent that throw the ecutalk out too?

Its quite common for contacts in the cluster to start cracking with age, rattles in the car will mean it sometimes ,makes contact, sometimes partially sometimes not....? if you have a spare cluster around just plug that in as a easy test?

    Thanks for the input guys.

Yeh mmarchall I was thinking the same. If the speed sensor is not working properly, then ecutalk wouldn't read correct figures.

With the cluster, I don't have a spare one. Every other gauge works alright in my cluster.

Taking out the cluster and soldering it isnt hard but it didn't fix mine for long. I'll be taking mine to be professionally done.

    Thanks mate,

If I take my cluster off the zed and take it to normal auto electrician. Will they be able to find which soldering point needs to be redone??

Or anybody have a picture of which soldering point needs to be redone.
    Please.

Safe bet do them all, that way ya can't go wrong. Your auto eleccy will know which ones too do anyways, that's why we pay them the big bucks

If you take it to an auto electrician then chances are it'll be cheaper to buy a working one.

I had similar issue, speedo would erratically jump all over the place. Had a friend re-solder the speedo sensor (in cluster) for me & when I re-installed it the speedo was totally dead. This indicated to me that the problem was the speedo sensor & my friend had in fact made it worse haha.

I removed it again & noticed he accidentally bridged two points. Fixed that and working perfectly again :)

Auto Electricians are generally NOT Instrument Technicians.
Either get another Speedometer and replace your unit OR have a go at carefully re-soldering all the joints on the circuit board on the rear of your Speedometer.
There is a "How to" in the Tech Section of this site.
It's not hard, it's just necessary to take your time and be precise.

You know... I'm not bothering with a proper reply outlining my post. I got a thanks so obviously there was something useful.
