I was expecting the heatercore to be somewhat larger and heavier than what it actually is. Its actually lighter than the can of degreaser. Oh well, when nissan charges nearly $1000 for a series 1 ptu, what else can we expect?? For those interested, keep an eye out in the events discussion section for the weekend when I'll be disecting my dashboard.

Replacing heater & flushing old coolant

the heater core I received on Friday had an ominous warning "one drop of old coolant will corrode the new core within a month"
I find this a bit of an overkill statement, essentially to deny any responsibility for any corrosion that might occur. In reality its pretty hard to remove all traces of old from all parts of the system? What do others think?

    scaremongering perhaps??

I plan to flush my coolant when doing the heatercore and add some Redline Waterwetter. But I think its extremely hard to remove every drop of old coolant. Plus, wont the coolant get old and contact the heatercore eventually anyway??? I dont see how old coolant currently in the system and coolant that will eventually get old is different? HMmmm...Cheers

Agree, as a 'warranty void' warning it's ...

... a bit over the top. Especially the "one drop" bit. However, old coolant (cocktails) can be extremely corrosive. This is why you should flush the system annually and ONLY ever use one brand of Inhibitor, in the recommended % dose.Damaging 'cocktails' occur when systems not flushed for several years or more, have many types of Inhibitor added without regard for % dose.Cheers, Rob.:-Z

It is true that even a very small amount>

of old coolant will contaminate "new" coolant and negate it's anti-corrosion properties. That is why the system should be flushed thoroughly before filling with new coolant.Cheers

    Flushing without removing the thermostat?

Is there a way to completely flush the engine without removing the thermostat? When I tried doing it, the thermostat was closed and I couldn't get it to flush properly.AB

    I was thinking maybe....

to drain the coolant a week before and then just put in plain distilled water without coolant. Drive the car around a bit as I would assume this would further dilute out any remaining coolant. Then flush the water and add the fresh coolant. Obviously, the more times you do it, the more old coolant you would get out. It may be long winded but I dont feel like pulling things apart to flush the engine. Cheers
