    Hi all

Have had a search but couldn't find anything.

This past year I got my alternator rebuilt also power steering pump has been rebuilt (some background info) one of the belts squeels for maybe half to a second on startup. Car has been running a little rough lately.

    1990 5spd man N/A J-spec 2+2

My car has been having an issue these past few days.

Firstly on Friday i was driving down to work the car stalled once, restarted ok nothing seemed wrong then car stalled again after 1-2 min of driving. Then car stalled again made a noise like when you are trying to start car with a flat battery and engine light came on. At all times the car stalled i was slowing down to a stop after down changing and clutch out.
I had my lights, stereo and air con on. Pulled into servo checked engine all seemed ok. Drove back home and got gf's car to go to work.

Took Z for many short trips max 15km over weekend. no sign of engine light or any problems. I took the car to work today, Monday and was fine on the way down 35km run with roads 60,80 and 100km/h.

Went to drive home stereo on low, no lights or aircon on(this is where the fun begins) After about 5-10 kms of driving I smell some light electrical burn coming from engine. Then I notice my air con display had gone off and air con was not working. Engine temp was normal.

After a little while more (10kms) after getting on and off highway it smelt worse and friend from work who was driving beside me could smell it. Pulled over at servo. Fuse box was very hot took off cover and found the 2 green large square fuses IGN and EGI seemed to be extremely hot when touching top. The electrical smell was very present on this side of the engine (passenger). Yet could not find where smell was coming from.

Nursed the car home and noticed when revs were just above 2k the Air con display would flicker and go out. When clutch was in or revs below 2k the display would come back on again. Tried to stop into auto electrician but were closed. Made it home safely.

    PTU was not hot.

    Any idea's?

Sounds likes the voltage regulator is kaput

    Best advice >>>

Get yr Zed to an Auto Sparky asap. Whether it's a mechanical problem causing a short, or alternator over/under charging* ... it will do no good by driving it.

Call Nick at Labrador Auto Electrics [750m from Gavin Wood Autotech], I'd suggest towing the Zed there.

    * Alternator/reg. under-charging can produce some of yr symptoms and over-charging will normally cook (boil) the battery.

I suspect you may have a few related faults.

    Yeah,

I am going to take it to an auto elec shop in upton street tomorrow morning as is less than 1km from my home and have had friends get work done there.

If it is my alternator I'll be pretty annoyed as it was only re built not that long ago

    Thanks for your input

    I had a similar problem

when my alternator went. My aircon display dissapeared, I quickly found out that I was running my car off the battery:eek: .
