ok everyone, so after i went to the drags on wednesday night the way home the car was smelling pretty bad of clutch.. but then went away after a while.. but im driving it 2nite and every 30 mins or so this smell keeps coming back for a minute then goes again.. the clutch is not slipping and seems fine.. though the thrust bearing is gone as im tending to crunch a few gears.. is the clutch burnt out..:(

(i also replaced break pads on that day but they wouldnt contribute right)

also i have a clunk coming from the front of the car under braking.. from searching it sounds like tension rod bushes.. how much are they roughly to get..
    :(

    If the clutch

If your clashing gears it's not a good sign.
Did they clash before drag racing?

you bedded the brake pads in at the drags ??? :bash: :bash: :D im not sure the pads will be the problem, but they are now probably glazed

    Stock clutch?????

Not liking the smell off that ey! Not sounding good, but it may be all the crap from the wear at the drags getting stirred up. Drags = not lots of clutch life. My stock clutch died after my first visit to WSID drags, but it was slipping on the way home LOL:D .

Clunking from the brakes in the Z32 can be the pads needing shims, had this problem with mine initially. The noise it makes is the pads/rotors reseating as they come under load, quite common I am lead to believe if no shims are fitted. But check out the bushes just the same for safeties sake:D .

    I wouldnt drag anything else.

I know autos are popular, as is adding launch control

But imho, if you do that, you might as well smoke a pipe and read the paper while your CAR does the 1/4 mile FOR YOU ;)

Back on topic: I had this... thought I'd lost traction one day but actually my evil left foot was riding the clutch like a cheep sister, and rest of that day had AWFUL smell of clutch.

Then for weeks, every time I used the car it would come back are a while and then go again as you've described

That was when it was a weekender mind you

No it doesn't smell at all and still grips nicely

Yes of course you've glased it a bit, just as my little stunt has no doubt, but the smell should go away and the car will be drivable

but yeah, if you want all that grip back its new clutch time coz some has gone for sure.

Golden rule for anyone into track, but especially drag racing: "Your clutch is a consumable now, just like brake pads, tyres, oil and fuel"

lol yeh its still has the same clutch i bought the car with over a year ago.. and its been thru 2 trips to wsid so i should be happy and still isnt slipping.. and there are shims on the break pads.. but i dont think it has anything to do with the breaks.. the clunk started prety much 3 days after i had been to the drags:confused:

    neways im going to bed

Ever seen a 10 second drag car hook up from a transbrake launch at 30psi? Someone who doesn't know how to handle such power will put themselves into the wall real quick, I'd hardly call it a cakewalk to launch a car like that. Depending on your application, a manual transmission will only go so far on a drag car before you end up going thru 5 clutches a year.

I love manuals, automatics ARE boring on street cars I agree. But when it comes to drag cars you have to do what's right for the job. But for those just dragging for the fun of it in their street car, it's not something I would recommend. On a purpose built turbocharged drag car with gobs of power you'll get to the stage eventually where a transbrake auto is a must though.

I dont tend to be very pedantic about spelling as some of mine isnt too hot due to crook typing. But this spelling mistake really gets up my nose.

    Dude, Its "BRAKES" :bash:

WHY CANT PEOPLE GET THIS RIGHT ??????????????

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

    Manuals for 1/4 mile...

Just check out the top 8 spots of the 1/4 mile list. you will see which is the most common ;) :p

That's a fair point, but I bet nobody here has a proper automatic and is still using the stock slush box. Even a shift kit in a stock automatic doesn't allow it to hold more power, and with people pissing away cash on SAW kits instead of actually building a serious auto it really is no wonder that the top 8 are manual cars.

A manual takes MUCH more skill to launch though, if all things are equal besides the transmission. Who cant stand stand on the brake while bringing the revs up? lol A transbrake on the other hand at neck snapping launches is something different all together. I wouldn't drag my 89 manual turbo regularly, just because I think it's too taxing on the clutch etc but I have another car more suited to it so I guess that's why I wouldn't more than anything else.
