Hey guys. Can anyone tell me if its possible to re sleeve a motor that has a 20 thou overbore. Apparently there is scoring in 1 or 2 of the bores so need to know if the block is still usable. Any help would be good. Thanks...

take it 40 thou .if that wont fix it get a another block.

This. Sleeving is much more expensive than getting another block.

It may be only two pots that need re sleeving. The hassle and costs of finding another block and having it delivered and dismantled and inspected all need to be taken into account. Sure I could have it bored to 40 thou over but wouldnt I then need to buy all new pistons as well or would oversize rings do the job there ?.

Rings suit a piston, and a bore is sized to suit a piston.

If you go 40thou over then you will need new pistons.

    And head gaskets

I believe that is only for metal head gaskets, or if you get carried away and go >40thou.

Umm its going to cost you much the same to have some sleeves done, bored to size and then all bores given a quick deglaze then re-ring and reassemble M8 as reboring to +0.040 with new pistons and rings.

Were the scores noted with a borescope or is the engine diamantled/heads off already?
How deep are they... more relevant, what caused them???

Yep chances of finding another block sitting pretty at 0.020 just ready for your old pistons is pretty remote as well. Worn bores with worn pistons and further worn with a de-glaze will end up with basically a worn out engine before you even light it up!

IMHO either live with the marks if they are not causing too much compression loss or fit another running engine.

I've got a 20thou over block taking up space in my garage ;)

Put the motor into A2zed for supposed valve stem problems. Blowing lots of smoke. Was actually a rebuilt motor that had recently been done and put on the dyno to tune in a g reddy e manage piggyback computer. Came back blowing smoke so put it into eric to check it out. He told me he couldnt get compression on the valve he was trying to repair and that there was scoring on 2 bores and it appeared to be caused by detonation he said. Also said the top of the piston was pretty rough. This is all on a motor that just had $5k spent on it so am trying to find the cheapest way to do a rebuild and not waste anymore money. Seems to be difficult to find a used motor with good testable compression that I can transfer all my new bits onto. The motor is still in the car as need to keep it mobile till I decide what Im going to do with it.

Thats handy to know. Will try to gather some more facts and then get back to you.

Sounds like whoever did your tune has fried your pistons. Either too much timing or too lean and the engine starts to ping and the heat will melt your pistons and possibly jam your rings closed so major loss of compression.

Sadly sounds like you're up for another rebuild. You'll likely have piston, ring and bore damage.
