Exhaust is 100 stock so I'm assuming divorced.

Smoke is both sides but more on driver side.

    Oil used was 10w40 synthetic

What are the chances this is PCV related?

Keeping in mind engine was in bits for a year.

The smoke is thick and constant. Idle. On load. The whole range from 1000 to 4500 rpm (didn't push it past that yet).

Will get Simon to check intake hoses to see if we're getting oil before the butterflies.

    Deja-vu all over this one.

It's like "The Metal" has come back to haunt me.

Reading some of my old posts is amusing though...

"What blue hose? All I can see is chrome"
(When someone was trying to tell me where the INTAKE hoses where).

    How embarrassing. :zlove:

UPDATE: All Fixed :D No Smoke!!!!!!

    Erm.... what can I say?

Drove to Simons today to help him swap out the oil for some thicker stuff to see if that would at least make it drivable.

We didn't get round to even dropping the oil. The smoke was gone!

    I shit you not!

We jump started the car and drove it onto his drive and up onto a couple of bricks ready to drop the oil.

    No smoke.

Simon had shut the car off, so we jumped it again, and waited 5 mins.

    No smoke at all!

Waited for car to get up to temp. NO SMOKE!

Drove round the corner to Romonski's to drop stuff off, and a tiny bit of smoke but nothing much and dissipated.

Drove back to simons to grab tools and stuff, via a BP to pump tyres up, and then we drove 30 mins to Jinxed's house to drop stuff off.

    NO FRIGGIN SMOKE!!!!!

I drove the car back myself (coz im tempted to buy it lol) and NO FRIGGIN SMOKE AT ALL!

    Speaking to Ross and Andy....possibilities?

    1) Old oil but we doubt it
    2) Stuck valve that's now lubricated and working again
    3) Dry turbo seals that NOW are doing thier job now they've soaked up some black stuff.

Whatever the reason, all I can say is......boys.....after 12 months hard work, this car is ALIVE! It's fkn FIXED with .....what seems to be ....ZERO ISSUES!

    Aircon WORKING
    Heater WORKING
Boost gauge WORKING and holding full boost nicely.
    Oil Pressure gauge WORKING.

    WHAT A FKN RESULT!!!!!!!! :zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove:

Due to Simon still having some financial issues hanging over his head, the car will be going up for sale next weekend.

1 tidy 93 Twin Turbo will be hitting the market soon.....if I dont buy it between now and then.

After driving this car, I am torn. It was awesome to be driving a GOOD 300ZX at last.

My problem is this. I then jumped into my 300C to drive home, and keeping in mind it's a totally newer and different car.... it felt just as "quick".

    But still.

Given I want an unmolested 300ZX for "future"....this may well be the one I "should" buy.

    We'll see.

Whatever the outcome, both Simon and myself can not thank you guys enough that have been involved from day 1.

From those that helped "efficiently" strip her down, to those that came to learn (myself included) to those that were there every single time. WE THANK YOU!

To come from MILES away, over and over again, as this car fought us time and time again, you guys kept stepping up and putting in the time and effort to see this car put back together.....for a guy you didn't even know (Simon).

Great effort guys! Simply stunning! And now....an absolutely great result!

brilliant to see our hard work and many hours actually yeild a good result.

This car will be a good buy to someone for certain, late model and 100% stock except for a 300kmh speedo.

Still reckon you should grab it ugame, be silly to let this one go and then by a inferior car later on down the road.

    can i borrow your torch?

Yep and yep I know guys :(

Sadly for me, too many other priorities can use the money.

The biggest part for me is the fact that as said, I KNOW this one is good. We've all seen it get stripped down and then be put back together bit by bit, with Andy making sure all torque sequences were followed and everything.

    man........

would look good sitting in my garage though....waiting for the mood to grab me and the roads in the hills waiting.

Simon is active on the forums now so his story to tell, but the latest news is the car died again.

He'd been driving it regularly, and just as he left his home, it stopped and wouldn't re-start.

RAC guy spotted what he thinks is one of the belt idler pulleys having eaten through the belt cover.

I've not been to look at the car.

I've just dug out one of the parts invoices and sure enough as I thought.... we replaced the tensioner (I knew that for sure) AND the centre pulley.

    13070-45V04 Nissan OEM 300ZX Timing Belt Tensioner Z32 $155.00 1 $155.00
    450-8920 GMB Pulley Assy - Idler Center Top Z32 $49.95 1 $49.95

So to be honest **** KNOWS why it's all gone pair shaped.

    Everyone is gutted.

Went and took a look yesterday and had a face to face chat with Simon and got him to talk me through that happened and where.

    The events
From what I pieced together from everything he's told me, events were as follows:

    1) Started car and heard "belt squeal" which then settled down.
He said "remember how you said stuck valves may cause this".
I corrected him "No stuck valves or something may have been the cause of the smoke. There wasn't ANY belt squeal before. So did it squeal when you started it up on the day it died?"
"Yes, but then it settled down".

    2) Simon then drove the car off the drive, onto the road (residential area) and got about 5 houses down where:
"I pushed the clutch in ready to accelerate, engine light came on and it just died and came to a stop".

*Let's add in here the fact that Simon had also said that the neighbor heard what he thought sounded like gearbox failure*

    3) Tried to re-start the car but nothing. Not even turning over (according to Simon).

    4) Pushed car back to home.

    5) RAC took a look (I assume next day, not sure) and tried to start it and removed oil cap to confirm engine not trying to turn over AT ALL.
RAC bloke points out pulley has eaten through belt cover.

So according to Simon, he doesn't think the engine has "cranked" at all since it died.

He said there was no "shudder". It just "came to a stop".

So I'm hoping we've dodged a bullet and there's no internal damage.

Wont know until we pull off the front end, and re-do the timing.

    What failed?

Top centre idle pulley tried to escape
Nut was loose and only just hanging on by 2 threads
    Bolt had snapped off.

My guess is that the nut worked loose, allowing the pulley to shift forward. That plus the tension from the belt, and the new added leverage from being too far forward lead to the bolt snapping off.
    But that's just a guess.

However I can't see how a bolt snapping first, would THEN lead to a loose nut.

    Plan....?????

It's up to Simon to keep the FS thread up to date. I know he's thought about seeing if someone wants it for a project car, but on the other hand, if the car has saved itself so that we can fix this 1 mistake (a loose nut) then we'd be stupid to not do it.

    1) New belt (doesn't look damaged at all from the part I can see but why risk it?)
    2) New timing cover
    *Arrange tech day to.....*
    3) Pull off belts and pulleys and re-attach and double check everything
    4) Re-set the timing
    5) Ensure all nuts that should have loctite, have it
    6) Put it all back together
    7) Pray like buggery.

    Who's in?

Why was the idler held on with a bolt in the first place with what looks like a standard flat washer . That should be a stud . Chances are the bolt has worked its was loose due to insufficient torque or has snapped due to tension and being the wrong grade of bolt !!!

Is be asking who put that bolt in rather than a new Nissan stud as per 100k service

Sorry I'm possibly miss using the term bolt. I believe it was a stud. thread at both ends with smooth bit in the middle as pictured

Third picture in my above post. That's the snapped stud with the nut on the end to show how close it was to coming off. Test of stud is in place in fourth picture
