Hi all. Thought I'd post an update on how I've been going since the rebuild. As I've just recently completed my run in procedure.

Actually it's more of an excuse to brag about my legendary engine building prowess.:D

I ran the engine on Penrite run-in oil for 500kms, then did two 2500km stints on 15-40w mineral oil. All with boost set to about 8psi.

A couple of weeks ago I switched over from the mineral oil to Mobil 1 and cranked the boost a bit. Good times.

Have a couple of issues to sort out but on the whole the engine is running very smoothly. Which is nothing short of miracle considering it was me who put it together.

    OK back to the issues.

    1. When cold there's a rattling noise that begins when approaching 3000rpm. I never rev higher than that when the engines cold and the sound completely vanishes once warmed up. Is this just the forgies rattling around a bit or could it be something more ominous?

    2. The idle is very high on cold start, like well over 1000rpm. Does it occasionally when warm as well, but generally sits pretty solid on 700-800rpm. I haven't really investigated this too hard, apart from ensuring the TPS was set right via datascan. Supposing it could be a boost leak or something.

    3. Probably the most concerning is an intermittent whining noise coming from the engine somewhere. It's not always present but it's probably there more often that not and the pitch increases with RPM. Using the old giant screw driver technique I think I've tracked it down to coming from the drivers side exhaust cam. Well at least the sound is most prominent when the screw driver is on the that cam cover. Anyone have any clues on this one?

That's all, on the whole I've been a very happy chappy to be back zedding again. A year is certainly far too long to be out of a zed.

    The rattle

your hearing may not be the pistons, they rattle right from cold start to normal tempture. I'd be taking the cover off that exhaust cam and checking the bearings, just to be sure they are not marked, you had the heads recoed?

The idle is normal and it should be doing that. AS for the others good luck lol.
