I have been unable to select reverse gear...can't slot it in at all, its almost like there is no slot there. Forward gears are OK...no probs. Seems like a selector problem, any ideas

    couple of possibilities...

    1. Could be that you have a broken or bent shift fork which isn't allowing the selector to go all the way into gear properly. - Suggestion is to take it to a Transmission Repairer and get it quoted. If there is a problem there, Pay the extra and get the Billet Alloy Shift Forks. $1400 a pair from memory, WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Option 2 is that if you are having a bit of trouble getting into other gears as well as just Reverse, by that I mean any resistance what soever it could just be the Clutch. But the way you have described it sounds more sinister I'm afraid. :)

Best bonus is :p BILLET ALLOY SHIFT FORKS :cool2:

    if it's only reverse

couldn't it still be the clutch not disengaging properly? In our old Torana we had to keep adjusting the clutch cable every now and then, as eventually we couldn't select reverse all other gear were OK. Can you select reverse with the engine off, if so I'd say it's the clutch and line not working properly? look for leaks in the hydraulic line.

    I'd try clutch adjustment first...

As for billet forks on reverse :whatever: Not everyone is as hamfisted as you Sean ;)

The problem is 100% likely to be a broken Reverse Gear Detent. This is a very common problem in our manual box(I have had this happen, and know of several others since mine broke).
It can be repaired fairly quickly(one day turn-around), and a good fix is to use the Detent from a Nissan Patrol box(it's slightly stronger).
The spring-loaded Detent has to move so as to let your selector enter the reverse gear pathway, when it breaks/jams it totally closes off the reverse pathway so that there is no indication of a "gate" entrance.
