Restoring hatch plastic; which paint to use?

Discussion in 'Non Technical' started by FatChickThriller, Jan 13, 2015.

  1. So the plastic trim in my hatch has seen better years. The owner before me was a little careless, and there are a lot of scratches and scrapes on the plastic around the speaker housing, and on the plastic hatch trim.

It has been suggested to sand the plastic back a little, and hit it with some paint. I imagine some of you have done this. Is there any specific paint you guys find works best? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I persinally wouldnt paint the trim. It might look tacky after the paint starts cracking or fadingfrom tye sun exposure. I would either buy brand new covers or get some good condition used covers.

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

As above. I would consider a vinyl wrap for a nice consistent DIY finish.

I think you should carefully trim back any raised edges on deep scratches in the trim plastic in boot area or hatch.
Use a blade or some kind of hobby tool for etching clay or vinyl tiles.

I have seen some good results with bare flame polishing, but it is also easy to cook and blister plastic.

I did go to a paint shop and get some gray vinyl paint mixed up, so I could TouchUp the ends of my cargo blind caps and I also used that paint to replace the vinyl trim on my targa.

Use urethane paint and prep it properly.

I forgot to write, that I didn't think painting the large plastic areas that get exposed to frequent rubbing was worth the effort, just tidy up the rough edges with a blade or hobby tool and see if you can live with it.
Painting small plastic pieces is OK, but if there is a lot of contact eg. Interior door handles, then find a different solution.
