So, I've got a quote for some panel work and a full respray (inc. door jambs) - $6000. That's if I do the majority of the prep (removing trim, sanding existing paint, removing stone chip, removing lights, stripping doors/mirrors).

Does that sound reasonable to you guys?

With any question like this, you're best to do the homework yourself. Ring around other places, get some rough quotes. Then have a look at some of the work they've done.

$6,000 sounds extreme if you are stripping it out and prepping it. But I have no idea the quality of their work.

If it were me, I'd want to see some of the work they have done & how much the job cost.

Cheers Sim. I've got a few other shops to visit this week, but thought I'd get some opinions on the first quote in the meantime.

That quote was supplied by F1 Smash Repairs in Bulleen. I know several members have used them in the past and highly recommend their work, so I'm sure they'll do a good job. I don't think anyone's posted up what they paid for a full respray at F1 though, hence my curiousity.

The quote does seem a bit high-ish given I'll be doing a lot of the grunt work, but there's a whopper of a dent in the side that needs to be pulled out plus a bunch of smaller dents, so keep in mind that the cost of those is included in the six grand quote.

I had a big dent in the side fixed up and that cost about $2.5k to do including all works and paint. It does sound expensive, but if the work is excellent it would be alright I guess.

I live right around the corner, literally about a 2 minute walk from F1 Smash Repairs.

I used them to paint my 2k Spec Front Bar, 500 dollars, and it ended up taking them close to 2 months to do it, and when I placed the bar back on it was already flaking, this may have been an isolated incident but I'm not going back there.

    I have a quote for 8 -10 large,

    thats for pearl paint job

    colour in primer
    base coat,
    pearl coat
    clear coat
    bake
    sand
    more clear
    bake
    sand
    finish

    full doors off respray

10 years ago 6 grand would have been about what you would pay for a show quality finish. i suppose now that would be about standard for a pro job at a non mates rates shop...

any less than 5 would be a bit iffy.
full resprays for 2large, don't even go near them...

i didnt get any paint work done at Smash Masters Geelong, but they get quality cars in there, almost nothing under 30k and they had a porche 4wd getting work done, a mean looking commodore and a few other late model euro's. I'd put money on them for quality..

I think OZX 300 paid about $13k for his full respray . But it too many months to complete .

I have been quoted for just spray and bake closed doors and bars seperate around $2k . That doesnt include paint and all the prep work has to be done myself . I had smash repair done there for my other car and they done a great job .

Then you park it in a car park and some idiot smashes you when openning doors Arggghhhh , makes you wonder why bother .

The sky's the limit when it comes to quotes from paint shops.
Not unusual to get quotes like that.

The amount of coats / type of paint / style of paint and colour etc has a lot to do with it as well.

Unless you dont have the time, in which case you would'nt be worried about the $$$ so much, I would buy the gear and do it yourself. (cost $1K for the gear and 1K for the paint and up to a 1k to sandblast it)

Spray painting is not that difficult once you have learnt the basic's and you would have plenty of cash left over to get it wrong and do it again. Best way to know something is done properly with the right amount of coats is to do it yourself and spray painting looks harder than it is - there is only two knobs on a spray gun - lol

Most of the work in spray painting is in rubbing it back very very smooth, if you can do that, you can paint anything including kandy/ pearl or satin.

    Just my opinion anyway

You should expect to pay between $4K - and up to the sky's limit (with an average of around $6-8,000 for a reasonably good job - you need to find out what they intend to do i.e. number of coats in colour/ clear etc etc in order to compare painters as well as some previous samples of work which was mentioned previously)

    Happy Hunting

I paid 3k for a same colour respray and it looks great. I had to do quite a bit of buffing and polishing afterwards but i wouldnt really wanna spend more than that unless it was a show car. That included a couple of minor dent repairs, and removing rear wiper.

    Didnt include door jambs

    Cheers guys.

Keep in mind, the $6k quote includes a major panel repair, numerous small repairs, a colour change (although still yellow, just a different kind of yellow) and door jambs sprayed.

I'm happy to do the prep, and given the testimonials that other members of this forum have given about this particular repair shop I've no doubt the workmanship will be good. It's a lot of money, yeah, but given the context I think it's a reasonable price.

As for doing it myself... no thanks. I'd rather leave the actual painting to a professional.

Did you take it back to F1 and ask Frank about the defect? He painted my 2k front bar 6 years ago n its still perfect.

in the process of doing this myself and am also a panel beater so I am prepping it myself. But your price still has a lot of variables, Mainly what brand paint, this is a big one a good brand is going to cost, even a good line of an average brand costs more. I have used 1 litre of autothane primer so far and expect to use another 1/2 litre at least. I have not had a good panel they have all had major carpark damage and the quarters and sills were so bad I would not have started if I knew before hand. I have been told that the paint (PPG Deltron) and the primer should come in at around 1.5-2K thats for AH3 then there is the rubbing between primer and paint and the rubbing of all the car pre primer. trust me if you want it done right there is a lot of work in this part. Our cars T tops that is) have more nooks and crannies than I care to think of. for me a stripped car ready to be repaired is 4-6k depending on the size of the shop and the paint used. if you add R&R then I would hate to put a price on our cars.

Still very useful information for anyone considering painting their car. Members search topics all the time for information, just because its an old thread doesn't mean it won't be read and re-read.

there are shops who will do the respray for 3k walk in walk out including door jams

but doing the work yourself stripping it and masking it. there are also shops who will just lay down paint for you, or ask someone who knows how to paint to paint it for you. there are booths for hire.

i got a friends car painted, i did all the prep work and got it in highfill sanded back and ready for paint and i only charged him 1000, gave him the number for a shop and they supplied paint and painted it for $1500 (he had to mask it and prepsol it ready for paint, and have it in the booth.)

so 2500 was not too bad.

like what some people say. if you go to mc donalds and you order a big mac you are not expecting a 5 star burger. they can live with the 3 star.

the paint came out probally a 7/10 with a couple of runs (clear) and one dull spot (bottom corner of rear bumper.)

$200 extra get it sanded back and buffed and the runs are out. dull spot still there...

so under $3000 for a full respray (door jams and whole car minus engine bay)

i shaved his rear key hole, and all his badge holes as his car was kicked in by some noobs.

    its actually not that hard
