Replacing blown turbo

Have to replace stock turbos with 2nd hand ones I just purchased. Do I need any special tools or anything or is it just a matter of removing the blown one and bolting on the replacements one.
I think only one is blown..should I just replace it or both of them as they would have done the same amount of work I presume..or doesnt that make any difference?

Considering you're going to need to remove the engine to replace either turbo, you may as well do both while it's out.

 

Change them both, but ensure that the second hand ones are good!! You will be really p---ed off if you replace the engine and find the turbos still have a problem. You might like to drop Eric "drz400y" a PM and ask him what to check for before installing 2nd hand turbos.

 

If you want to keep it standard and will be keeping it for a while I would put in new CHRA's. $450 ea from Coz IIRC.

 

The only special tool you'll need is those to pull the engine out. (yes, it's an engine out job to do it practically)

And definately do both turbos at the same time. While it's out, replace all your water hoses to them at the same time.

 

I had to modify a 13mm ring spanner (ie grind the shit out of it) so I could undo one of the nuts holding the passenger side turbo on.

 

2nd on the 13mm spanner grind lol.

Waste of time replacing just one turbo. Also, if I was going to use 2nd hand turbos I'd have them rebuilt first.

Which turbo? If it's the passenger turbo and you are only going to use second hand turbos, then you can replace it without pulling the engine. Make sure replacement turbo has same AR. You will need a fairly comprehensive tool kit and will have to modify a 13mm ring spanner as others have suggested.

 

is that for one of the bolts holding the PS turbo to the mani?
i cant for the life of me get the clostest to the front + engin bolt on the turbo and mani.

remove that and i can get the turbo off. fkn killing me.

 

iv done it with engine in,and its a bitch.

youd also have to modify a flat screw driver and give it a 45 degree angle so u can undo the freeking clips that hold the bolts down on the mani.
