Well after having a stuffed oil pressure sender unit for nearly 6 months, i finally decided to change it. I replaced it with a VDO unit rather than the nissan one. It was oil change day today so what better time. It was rather easy, but I figure it would be more tedious for you TT guys since I dont have a big fat turbo hovering above. Hence, more room to move.
[image]http://users.bigpond.net.au/vader/vdo2.jpg[/image]Anyway, was wondering if the oil pressure should read the same as the old nissan unit. With the nissan unit, its usually 6 when cold, 2 when warm and at idle and 4 when warm and driving. However, with the new unit is seems to read:6 when cold (fine)
[image]http://users.bigpond.net.au/vader/cold.jpg[/image]but didnt really move from 6 when driving. Odd?? or normal for this unit?? This was after having driven the car for about 15 minutes after a cold start.
[image]http://users.bigpond.net.au/vader/driving.jpg[/image]and then when back at home after driving, it read 4 at warm idle.
[image]http://users.bigpond.net.au/vader/warmidle.jpg[/image]It seems that everything is increased by 2 compared to the normal unit. Or maybe 15 min not enough to lower oil pressure??? Not sure. Any comments??Anyway thanks to Zcar91 for the adapter and great tech article, thanks also to WYKKED who also gave me an adapter..:) So yeah, I have one spare. Which of you 2 wants it back??? And thanks to simon (ttz) for getting the parts for me nice and promptly.Cheers

    BigCol That's what she said...

    Was it a hard job?

I really need to do this. My guage has been working only when cold for 3 years and like you I think it is time do fix it. Maybe at the Wykked tech day?

    no not at all......

The tech article is quite clear and there is heaps of room to move around in. You just have to have the right tools. I'm lucky because my brother-in-law is a mechanic/engineer. It took me about 1 hour, and I'm a slow worker.Cheers

    No that seems about right

when the oil is cold then the oil pressure will be high as the viscosity is (oil is thick) and the pressure relief valve will be relieving and as it gets warmer and the engine rpm increases the oil pump produces more flow but the relief valve will still relieve at the same as Idle pressure- 6.
However when warm the idle pressure will drop because the viscosity has dropped due to the oil thinning because of the increase in temperature and there is insufficient flow to affect the relief valve so the output will be below 6 and as you say is 4.
I think the Nissan senders are adversely affected by heat and thats why they are erratic. What was the part number of your sender and where did you buy that chrome dash? Looks greatregards John:cool:

    answers.....

The sender unit is a VDO unit. The part No. is 360.005. Zcar91 was the first to try these, and they seem to work well and much cheaper than the nissan one. They can be bought at any parts place like repco or bursons. I got mine through Simon (TTZ). As for the dash, I also bought that from Simon..:) Its a stainless steel cover for the speedo cluster. I quite like it. Trouble is, to install it you have to remove the speedo cluster, but its not hard just time consuming.Cheers

    VDO readings...>>

I think you will find the pressure readings using the VDO unit are about "1" unit higher than the stock Nissan OPS.I have had no trouble will any of the units here in the ACT failing. However, a couple have failed in Melbourne (RZM has had two fail?) and the "loose" reason for failure is using a lightweight oil such as < 10W30.CheersPS: I will soon be making more brass thread adaptors and will post a few to Simon/STILLEN and WYKKED (if they will agree to hold them).

  8. Thread Size

Is the thread size on the VDO unit the same as the Z orig or will I need an adaptor?
Just answered that one by going to the tech section.

    Thanks Zcar91....

yeah I noticed that the reading was higher than the stock OPS. Still, I've already gotten used to the new readings and what to expect at different conditions. I prefer it to driving around with an OPS that reads zero all the time..:)Cheers
