I had my thrust bearing go early December. Replaced that along with spigot bushing, clutch and rear main seal. Been on the road just 2 months and doing really low Ks (maybe 3000 at the most), anyway the thrust bearing died again today, i'm sure of it, exactly the same noise, disappears with only the slightest of clutch pressure. What the hell has caused this early failure? I have a spare one anyway that came with the clutch (which I didn't know needed replacing until I had a look at it, good grief it must have been metres from turning into a slipping mess), so it won't cost me any money, but how bloody frustrating. This'll make 3 gearbox removals in less than 6 months (damn lucky I can do it myself). Do I have any case whinging to Nissan about supplying me a dodgy bearing?
ive done about 4-5 gearbox removals in 6 moths > eariler last year when i had a gear chrunch prob changed oil, spigot bearing, looked at the flywheel, put standard flywheel back on ended up being a prob with the clutch.
what clutch are you using? I have had wierd noises before and now i am sure it is the clutch making the noise as i inspected the bearings myself and they were fine. I had the gearbox problems all fixed and rebilt the entire thing and it is my clutch which makes the loud whining.
Thrust bearings can be killed by incorrect adjustment of the clutch, which allows the bearing to just make contact with the clutch pressure plate fingers all the time, even though the clutch is engaged (ie clutch pedal all the way out). This causes the bearing to spin all the time, and wear itself out. Is the clutch pedal sloppy or slack? Maybe the return spring isn't doing its job properly. Same problem can be caused by a habit of resting the left foot slightly on the clutch while driving.
it's an extreme clutches heavy duty organic but i got the bearing out today and it's stuffed, feels a bit like one of the balls has disintegrated and now has a grainy sort of feel to it. the new one goes in tomorrow, we'll see how that goes.
nah the clutch feels pretty sweet actually a little too stiff when sitting at the lights but nothing neutral doesn't fix. If anything I'd say the clutch engages maybe a bit closer to the floor than I'd like, but it's far from a problem, probly just need to crawl under the dash and adjust the little rod (bugger that, my back means more to me than a perfect take-up point, anyone know where you can hire midgets?). Oh and I never rest my foot on the clutch.
