I've got some areas on the both of the front guards where the clear is peeling off. I've seen a few painters and they reckon that if they only respray the guards withouth blending it in and repainting doors and bonnet, the paint will look noticeably different. Is this true? I thought that a good painter should be able to match a factory color no problem?
Metallic colours are near on impossible to spot repair(no matter how good the painter may be)due to the suspension of the metallic powder in the paint sample. The painters you've spoken with know that, which is why they have given you good advice. Take it(you won't be happy otherwise).
Try just doing clearcoat..... You might be able to cut back just the top clearcoat with some VERY fine wet and dry and the apply a new clearcoat. You have to be very patient and take your time doing it, but it's worth a punt. The worst that can happen is you stuff it up, and if you do you are not much worse off than you are now
Would be nice if the clear coat was a completely different compound and you could buy a thinner for it...
a good painter can match the color, it can take a long time to get the color right, then the color can very from side to side, the color might look the same but its not, i am a spray painter i have played around with to many colors and it dose suck some times
This is generally a quick fix, for if the base coat isnt damaged, either buy the sun or water etc. If its just recently flaked off, this technique can work. but its a band aid fix. And if attempting it, try not to touch the base coat at all while sanding... Good luck with your decision.
