Oh... Doesn't sound good? So it grinds while IN gear?

Output shaft bearing? I think bearings would be cheaper than having to rebuild with new synchros

Does using the clutch while in gear effect it grinding? could also be clutch plate or throw-out bearing

Yeah grinding in gear. Low revs. Also there is this weird white shit that is built up around the shifter bushings (Bought new brass bushings just in case). Not saying the previous owner put anything in there, and I will ask, but yeah look like some sort of white grease or silicon has been put down around the shifter bushings. I'll try and snap a photo tonight.

More likely a bearing noise than related to synchros then. Are your shifter boots intact?

sorry fists can you clarify what you mean? So if I am cruising around in low revs when its grinding, and I push the clutch in, does the grind stop? If that's what you are asking then yes, completely stops.

When I sold you the car from memory it had a thrust bearing noise, nothing while driving though.

Def drain the oil, check for any specs of metal, and put some decent oil back in.

And Tas, ... I started laughing before I even started reading your post lol! I knew what was coming :p

Yeah, that's what I was after, unless its load-related I would guess that the noise is not from the gear-set since the the gears can rotate without noise when separated from the crank. I'd be thinking either something worn-out in the clutch assembly or a loose shifter fork. All of these options are cheaper than a gearbox which is good

Edit: if dropping the gearbox on the weekend with some mates is possible it would probably be the easiest way for you to diagnose but its not an easy job if you aren't practised at it and don't have access to car and transmission lifts.
As suggested draining the oil and checking for metal will give you a bit more of an idea. (wear old clothes, that stuff stinks and doesn't wash out very easily)

    Cheers Sammy.

I'll change the oil, check for metal etc. and if that doesnt help will look at bearings. Whats that white stuff around the shifter bushings? Any idea?

Rob, i'll have to check shifter boots.

Ok -not uncommon for the boots to tear, thus letting more noise into the cabin and leading you to think you need a gearbox...

appreciate the Help Rob. Cant clicks thanks? maybe handed out too many...

My shifter boot is actually off at the moment...but the noise isnt just a small grind, so I doubt having that on would mask the sounds.

I'd say if I was driving past someone it would sound to them like I was shredding branches with a stump grinding in my boot..

Wow that bad? Man id get onto the oil change as a priority -I hope it has some in there!

Oh and white stuff is probably white lithium grease?

Just read on Twin-Turbo that this problem could be with the NA rear end and Lightened flywheeel. So here's a bit more info on my car

    - NA rear end conversion
    -Lightened flywheel
-Exedy Sports Tuff Heavy Duty Clutch

grinding stops at about 2500rpm...if I am cruising around, I drive in a lower gear just to avoid the grind noise, keeping the revs up.

Might have to live with it but we'll do what I can to fix it.

It shouldn't really -chrome moly fly will be more resonant but the sound you're describing sounds more like bearings than harmonics

Rob so we're talking thrust bearing here?
Anyway to test this other than the clutch theory or is a "replace and see" type of job?

If it's happening in gear only then I don't think thrust beating although I'll admit gearbox internals aren't my string point. I'd be looking at output shaft bearing

that's what I was thinking as when the clutch is pressed the noise isnt there...so that counts out thrust bearing (although sammy said it had thrust bearing noise so I may check that too).

    Just thought of something.

When I bought the car, the drive shaft bearing needed to be replaced. I drove it up my driveway and that's it before replacing it. Lets say that it was driven a little whilst the drive shaft bearing was shot...could this have damaged the output bearing?

Thrust bearing on mine is a little noisy, when you put the clutch in it does go away.

Start with oil first. It's quick and easy. There are probably multiple noises going on so this may fix some of them. I'd also do the diff while you're at it.

Also when you drain it if there's metal in it you know you have bigger problems.
