I have done search but not satisfied yet and my case is a little different.

I have 2 seater NA with no cat, straight through resonator and 2.5 inch catback with the matching straight through mufflers (apexi N1 style).

I've been driving it for a year or so and now I just want something quieter. Should I change the muffler into the dual tipped version or should I add another resonator in the system (dual exhaust system as per original of course)

Do the environment a favour and fit some cats...........

plus it will have the added benefits of quietening your exhaust a bit and avoiding the $5,000 fine for not having cats.

He is in New Zealand I think

where its perfectly legal not to have cats on the car.

But yeah, fit some cats on, you wont be losing power and torque through it and if you did, it would be negligible (only a few kw difference on some big power TT's with a good exhaust system)

The dual tip mufflers should also help. I had a straight through 2.5" all the way exhaust with 2 dual mufflers and the x-pipe and sounded awesome and not overly loud at al

Does anyone even know of anyone getting a fine that high for no cats?

The worst I have seen for having no cats is a canary and a tiny fine of like $200 or something.

I have seen the above many many times but am still yet to see or hear of someone getting the 'up to $10,000' or whatever it states in the act.

I read a post on SAU (skylines australia)

where one guy got pulled over in Melb on his way home, and they fined him $2000 on the spot for not having any CATS on his car. $10K seems a little high, but still, I'd prefer to spend the $2K else where.

    Cheers

I was successful in doing this by installing an extra cross-pipe

between the two sides of the system.

    Type of resonators

I've just been through something similar - my new exhaust was too loud. As Dub said, an x-pipe will help but the right resonators will also make a big difference.
On mine, they started with a set of straight-through 'hotdog' style resonators but changed them to 'offset' resonators. These are used on the Commodore or Falcon (I think). They're a big, flat, oval shape and only just fit behind the cats (but you don't have any so the space will be less of a problem). They are straight through but contain a lot of steel wool and work quite well.
I've also seen a Z with a huge, dual in/dual out resonator located where the cats would go. That seemed to quieten things down a lot as well.
    See Ya,

    red32 You talkin' to me?

I had a custom-built 2-in/2-out resonator with an expansion chamber

in the middle fitted to my Zed for about AUD100. The central chamber has the same effect as an x- or h-pipe. Seems to work well.
    Cheers,
    Doug.
