Went out to watch Aza and Alan (ztoy) at the saturday sprints, from what i remember al's best time was a 63 something and aza was doing consistent 70's by the last run. aza had semi slicks only on the front and after the first round al had egged one of his slicks, so was back to his streets for the rest of the day

i'll let them give some exact times/ details on what happened :p

a pic of each i found on boost

Believe it or not the white #46 260Z was the second fastest car of the day, beating Porsches, the Viper etc. Only a stripped out Evo was faster and of course Pete was not there.

Maybe its not a Z32 but its still a Zed :zlove:

At the race days I have been to down here (only watching so far, hope to get on the track this year though) 260Zs have always done very well, always showing up the Porsches they always seem to be up against.

Great job getting out there and having some fun guys, too.

    Looks like a great day

Can't wait till the day my car is suitable to have a go. Whats with the holes in the bonnet of the dodge? Also how come there is such a mix of cars in on of those pics? Torana escort? commodore skyline?

It was an interesting day. Thanks to those who came out to watch and help. I managed to do a 1:03.32 on the first run but I kept getting caught up in traffic. Unfortunately that was my only run on slicks for the day as I overheated the inside edge of the LF tyre and it egged like the last one. I am learning the hard way about tyre temperatures and pressures. The fact that i'm fighting understeer out of corners isnt helping the situation either. :(

    However.

Because I couldnt run slicks anymore I did my last run on stock street 225's. My god it was so much fun. The car was sliding every where. This was my first experience of drifting at speed. I had no idea that it would be so controllable. I managed to somewhat to drift corners 4,5 and 6 together at one point. Coming into turn 2 at 120ish and not heel toe'in was damn fun too. My laptimes went 1:04, 1:07, 1:10 and so as I got more confident with the tail of the car. lol.

So i'm gonna spend a few more $$$ on the car and see if I can sort out the tyre issue. Might go to a practice session or a Wednesday arvo sprint and not go so hard and watch the tyre pressures and temp's to try find out whats going on.

Guy with the rs4 was called Matt, nice bloke too. It was his first run out there on slicks. Ran 2 seconds faster than last time with them on and ran a 1:00.03. Nice!!!

was semi happy with my times

did a 1:10.1 or something, could prob have been abit quicker if i had my semi slicks on the front and rear, didnt find out till sat morning that the wheels would not fit on the back cause of the shockie grrr lol, so i decided to try with semi slicks on the front and worn street tyres on the back, made for a very interesting day hit the brakes coming upto turn 3 and the back went out bigtime and i left the track sideways and about 5m from the cement wall lol

brakes were also a problem towards the end of the day i think i cooked the fluid and pads the pedal is very spongy now, new fluid and some ultimates all round should fix that thou. might also have to put stiffer springs on also till i can afford the coilovers as i got abit of tyre rubbing on the guard around turn 4

i think with semi slicks all round and some new pads there is a 1:07 in the little buzz box :D

    bring on round 3

Im getting some newer slicks from Sherrin Motorsport. Ones that wont have gone bad.

Next problem to deal with is the Understeer. I'm pretty sure thats go a fair bit to do with why its over heating. Any advice on how to dial it out?

I'm guessing coilovers are going to be a nescessity and are next on the shopping list.

I hope you don't mind me giving my 2c worth.

Understeer can be solved in a combination of a few different ways.

First and often not considered the most obvious: driving style. Slow in, fast out. Slower the car is going the easier it is to turn. Most people try to "save" time by out braking themselves... entry speed is often too fast.

Negative camber. How much negative camber are you running now; I would assume that because you are running slicks the car doesn't get driven all the time on the street? I'd be looking at about -2.8 - -3.5 degrees neg on the front. Bear in mind however the more camber you have, the less efficient the braking. When you were running your slicks did you take tyre temps in the inner, centre and outer edges? If so, was there a difference across the tyre surface?

Tyre pressures; understeer can be caused by too high or too low a pressure. Its generally too high if its just skating along the bitumen, too low if it starts bouncing and vibrating through the front wheels.

Bump/Rebound: If the suspension is set too firm, small undulations/bumps on the track/road will cause the front to run wide of the intended route; start playing with the bump rebound settings if you can along with the tyre pressures.

Thats about all that springs to mind. I'd add neg camber; set damper/rebound to half then work on tyre pressures.

I'm always happy to listen to someones 2c, just cautious of who's I take:p

Im currently running neg 4 degrees camber on the front but I'm starting to think thats too much. I kind of just jumped into using slicks without learning the physics behind them. I havent been watching the temps however but I am looking into a temp guage with probe so I can monitor whats happening on them.

Im still trying to get a good balance with the pressures. I cant believe how much difference there is between cold and hot pressure. Dunlop man at the track reckons that hot temps shouldnt exceed 32psi, mine keep going above. I'm droping the cold pressure more and more to try keep under. Just cant get a set of slicks to last long enough. lol:D

adjustable shocks will also help, even a cheap set of KYB AGXs will be way better than non adjustables.

setup the shocks so they are stiffer in the rear and soft in the front to combat understeer. a rear strut brace will also help.
