i'm doing the 100k service. i'm up to the crank pulley, and the kit i bought doesn't have the right size bolts to go into the pulley. are there any bolts any where else on the car that i could take off and use? the cars in bits so i cant really go and get a better puller. any help would be excellent!
Hey man, instead of using a pulley puller, get 2 crowbars and "walk" the pulley off on each side. -Kirill
the front part of the pulley the bit for the p/s is not held on by rubber, so if you have a 2 or 3 jaw puller you could very carefully ease it off. Have done this on a rb and l26 successfully with no damage.
Yes, use the big allen headed bolts you took out of the front timing belt covers, they're a perfect fit into the threads of the harmonic balancer Worked a treat for me.
No sweat mate. I'm in the same boat, mine's down to the bare heads at the moment in-car. You really do get a better understanding of your car when you do jobs like this, I look at it like a giant block of Lego! With a service manual and the tech section, you can't go wrong.
Oh and watch for these 'Woodruff' keys, which are the little half moon pieces of metal which sit in the end of the crankshaft which locate the crank sprocket behind the harmonic balancer, easy to lose items which are incredibly important. :zlove:
Any long M6 bolts will do the job. My puller didnt have the right ones either. Just grabbed some long ones from my box of Zed bolts.
I just used a claw puller, worked a treat, just dont use it on the front lip of the pulley coz you can chip part of it off.
I used to use one of these, But the bolt on type is easier and shorter so it fits behind the condensor better.
