hey guys my Z seems to have come down with something, it sounds like its missing (popping) especially when the revs are dropping it was minor before but now it seems to do it slightly louder, what would the possibilities be:confused:

Could be running rich, do you get a build up of black stuff on the back of your car or notice black smoke under load

running rich can cause the exaust to pop, richness can be caused by a few things, check the tech section for more ideas, to find out how rich you could try a dyno run, should cost about $50 for them to do power and AFR's

You been installing BOV's lately? Could also be bunch of other little things such as O2's, CTS, TPS, sparkplugs on the way out, etc etc. Depends how much it annoys you to how hard you wanna chase it down.

    im a

n/a, so no blow off valves here, my spark plugs where changed maybe 15,000kz ago and apparently there platinum spark plugs, the guy put bosch spark plugs and normal sparkies wont fit in them so im guessing sparkies is eliminated, as for the o2's my right one works perfectly left one is abit slower so i dont think that will be the reason for it, so hmm i dont know.

Tztztz, dont race your NA man...their not really made for that...
I havent heard many good things about bosch in Z32's, maybe try changing them to NGK Iridiums or platinum

    Ok

took the car to Advan this morning, they put the car on the dyno, then i recieved a call saying its could be either your waterpump or idle tensioner bearings, i told him i doubt its my waterpump because i have already put a brand new one on he then said ok i should go ahead and change the idle tensioner bearing and the idl bearing he said do them both it will fix your problem, so now where you guys recommend i get these parts from how much it cost rouphly? because he is going to get them from nissan and im thinking being nissan they will charge too much. He also said who ever owned your car before has looked after it very good because everything is clean parts are all good etc so atleast thats a thumbs up :)

    regards,
    John

    I can supply

Do a full 100k service. If the auto-tensioner is stuffed then everything else including timing belt, idlers, seals etc. should be replaced.

The labour alone to replace tensioner will be 5hrs, and wait 'til you see the parts bill. :(

How in the blue hell can a waterpump or

    idler bearings cause backfiring??????????????????????????????????????????

I'd start with checking your coolant temp sensor. a $25 item. It could be faulty and telling your ECU that the engine is colder/hotter than it really is and the ECU is running in the wrong fuel maps.

PLEASE eliminate the simplest causes first ...

Water pump or idlers can't; a buggered auto-tensioner may cause symptom due to slight mis-timing.
