Hey guys, I have had a loud lifter for ages, finally striped the top off and took out the lifters from 1 bank with the intension of stripping the little blighters down and cleaning them up. Problem 1... It was so much work to get at them and take them out that I don't want to risk putting the whole thing back together and finding the problem is still there. Problem 2... I just priced a new set for one side and the best I can do is about $90.oo per lifter So I just wondered if there was any way to check if a lifter was faulty and/or if anyone knew of someone that could check them over for me. I live in Sydney but I guess I can send them anywhere Dave
There is no way to check the lifters out of the engine. Your best bet would be to strip them down, have them sonic cleaned and reassemble them. There is an article in the tech section on how to strip and assemble. Any fuel injection shop should be able to sonic clean them for you. The ticking is caused by oil scale built up in the lifter check ball seat, this allows oil to drain from the lifter when the cam puts pressure on them to open the valves. The only high wear part of the lifter is the upper bucket that runs on the cam lobes, if these look ok and not pitted you can have them cleaned and then reassemble. For any that are too badly worn, CZP has them for about $30 odd US a pop.
Thanks Thanks for the info, I'll call an injector tech tomorrow. interesting price for newies, if I could get them close to that price in Aus I would replace both banks and have done with it, but I can't wait to long... Dave
CZP are quick to deliver apparently, and i suppose you can pay extra for faster shipping. For that money i say get newies in. GL!
