Pinging again

Damn it! My NA is pinging again at around 2800rpm in third and fourth as I go up a hill, not on a flat.
I recently put in a new temp sensor, and the timing was advanced from 10 degrees to about 15.
I only ever use Optimax. One thing I'd like to clarify is what does pinging sound like? To me I think it sounds like a couple of loose beer bottle lids rattling, is that right?

Anyway can someone suggest what I should check out next please? Could the knock sensor also be contributing to this?

    Cheers
    Geoff :(

Do you feel a loss in power......

If it was pinging I would think that you would feel a loss of power when it pings. Get someone who knows exactly what pinging sounds like and has heard it in a zed to have a listen. Sometimes its hard to tell. I thought my car was pinging at one stage, but a few people (mechanics) who can hear pinging have been in my car when it "supposedly" pings and they say its not pinging. Its actually just the exhaust pulses and the sound of air rushing through the manifold that makes the sound. Its also made worse by a noisy exhaust that "resonates" at certain rpms. Even now, with the headers I can hear the noise and due to the design of the headers its more distinct. But, I must say that mine does not make pinging noises when going up a hill in a high gear, so yeah get it checked out by one of the NSW gang who have heard pinging in a zed before. I hope its not pinging. Also, if still not convinced, you may want to get your fuel pressure checked to make sure the engine is getting enough fuel. From memory, at idle the fuel pressure should be about 35-37 psi and at WOT about 45psi. Dont quote me on those numbers but I think they are right.CheersCheers

Thanks matey, no power loss, in fact

it feels great! other than this rattle/ping! Cheers

I dont think you will have a loss of power

but in fact you will gain some at the expense of your engine. Pinging used to known as "pinking"in the old days because that is what it sounds like, and as you said just like bottles rattling.
The issue I think will be with that extra 5 degrees advance on the spark. Go back to your original setting and try it and I think the pinking will have disappeared:| regards John:cool:

isnt 15 degrees standard timing thou ??

i am running 20degs and mine doesnt ping but i have a noise there but im sure mine is a slight exhuast leak. colin heard a slight ping at 25deg when we dynoed mine so we put it back to 20 and seems fine. i would do as jedi suggest thous and get fuel pressured checked and maybe get the plugs checked see if there is deposits of carbon on them cause if you have a carbon build up on pistons that can cause pinging cant it??

    Pinging = power loss

Detonation is the actual technical term, and you will definitely get a power loss if it is heard, due to the nature of the mechanical action of what you are actually hearing, which is an explosive flame front hammering the top of the piston whilst it is still on its way up on the compression stroke, which is the opposite of what you want when trying to make torque.

    Geoff..>>

there are a few reasons to cause pinging:

    a) Poor quality fuel. Did you get a bad fill?
    b) Do you have a boost leak? Have you "blown" your motor to about 15 - 20 psi and checked for hose leaks?
    c) Are your injectors partially blocked? Run with some injector cleaner at the next fill and see if there is an improvement.

Timing of 15 btdc is normal if you have a stock ECU.

Remember to back off the power immediately when detonation is apparent.

    Cheers

PS: I have had all of the above happen to me at some time.

5 long 5 short on ECU test

After many phone calls and pleas for help, Thanks Chewy, Steven, ZCar91, Wykked and Jen,I managed to dislodge the consult plug and do the short circuit test and got the result of Code 55.Does this mean I got suckered in by some other noise that sounded like pinging? Or can it still ping even though it gave a 55? :s Cheers and I'm learning day by dayGeoff

    I think code 55.....

just tells you that everything is working properly. That means your detonation sensor is working fine. It doesnt tell you if you're pinging. Likewise, a code 34 (i think thats it) will tell you that your det sensor is not working, but not that you are pinging. ie, there are no codes that tell you if you are pinging.Cheers

    All fixed at 12 degrees

Once again thanks to everyone that helped me out. I was stressing just a tad. Thanks Shane for telling me which way to go without the benefit of a timing light. I dropped into a mates place this morning and he checked that I had set it correctly to 12 degrees, and hey presto NO PING..
    Cheers and thanksGeoff:D

    IB ?????

Do you have an aftermarket Japanese ...

ECU? You should be able to run 20 degrees advance with the stock ECU without pinging.

Nope, all standard as far as I know Ian (n/m)

    Hmmm, curious.....

A stock NA should run without problems at 15 degree's timing, and run comfortably even a few degree's higher. I run mine at 17 degree's with a Hitec chip, and have no probs. I figure that at 12 degree's you would be losing power. If it is truly pinging I still think there is something wrong if you can only run it at 12 degree's Oni. Sorry, but I would still get it checked out.
