    Hi guys,

Car started blowing a bit of white smoke again. Just seems to be doing it randomly now, not even when I'm boosting (idling tends to be when it happens). I just checked the dipstick and it's showing that it's higher than even the H on the gauge (checked several times). First thing, what conditions should i be checking the engine dipstick under for the best reading? Warm? Cold?
Second question is, could putting in too much engine oil cause it to smoke?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

I've heard that too much engine oil can cause damage. Someone else should probably confirm that tho. My engine oil was the same, I drained some out today.

    Too much not good

Yes, Too much engine oil can cause it to over pressurise the sump and push engine oil past the rings. Just drain some out and if needed refill to the full line only. Best way to check oil level is on level ground with car turned off for at least 10 to 15 minutes just to make sure all the oil has drained to the sump. The level should be no higher than the full mark on the dipstick.
    Hope this helps, Andy

yep, i had same problem 2-3 weeks ago, when change the old turn out i had about 5-7 liters oil in there, which was cause huge white smoke and leaks too.

and it usually comes with a noise that can sound like a light big end knock, i like to call this "aqua plunging".
the most annoying problem is that it can do your seals in.and no one likes a clutch with oil on it or even an oil patch on the driveway.
i don't think it can cause mechanical damage but it can break seals.
chances could be, that at idle thier isn't enough pressure to keep the oil out of the camber when its running or at idle thier is just enough air in the system to be burning the oil cleanly, regardless im sure this aint doing good for your cars economy or health.

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

This is where your PCV valve should come into play (if it's working properly). To prevent damage from overfilling, it will leak excess pressure (& some oil) out from your crank. (which can produce excess smoke)

But in saying that, you should definately drain some of your oil to reach desired (full) level.

    Warm

Yeah, too much oil is not good. If there is too much oil pressure the oil will be forced out via weakest seal.

Drain it, make a note of how much comes out (so that you know if it was overfilled in the first place...), and refill with appropriate grade.

just around the topic of the oil system...who else has trouble reading the damn oil dipstick.

    AndyMac Better than you

PCV's won't relieve excess oil pressure, only crankcase pressure. The oil isn't pressurized in the crank case. It will be forced through the weakest seal, usually rear main or turbo.

the smoke could be caused by the fact that your probably burning some oil
if it continues id suggest getting a thicker oil put in but thick oil can blow seals
