Just after some options and thoughts about car alarms.

Atm i have the stock Jspec alarm/immobilizer and Australia fitted one with microwave sensor, but two alarms mean to remotes.

I am considering upgrading to a singular unit.

I am after a reliable and effective unit.
I know a few people on the forums use Vipers, others units from car performance shops ect.

I was looking around and saw this:
    Spy 2 Way LCD alarm/immobilizer

What do you guys use? What are, if any, the regulations on Blue Slips/Insurance.

Also i would prefer one with Remote car ignition/disabling and automatic window raising and remoate alarm notification.

    Thanks a tonne

    Adam

    What stock Jspec alarm/immobilizer?:confused::confused:
Are you confusing the Remote Central Locking feature as being an alarm/immobilizer(because it most definitely is not)?

Im not 100% sure. With the car ATM, i have a black, about a inch square, remote with 2 buttons (assuming its OEM remote) and a smaller one for the car.
I thought i read somewhere that the 300's had immobilizer as standard

When i "lock" the car, top right one on the OEM remote, it automatically raises my windows if they are down, sets the immobiliser and locks the doors.

Im not sure which remote does what, but i need to remotes two disable the alarms so i can drive it

Perhaps your car had an aftermarket alarm/immobilizer fitted in Japan?(May have been an optional accessory offered by the Dealership).

No additionally security was around in 1989. I have a 90 aus and until last yeah have nothing but a key.

But back to the more important question.

What is a recommended car alarm, and what should you expect from car alarms?

Are you saying that there were no such things as Car Alarms and Immobilizers back in 1989 (because if you are, you're Sooo wrong)?:confused:

Make a list of features you want and go from there.

Like microwave sensor, PIN code requirement (look at BRANT alarms) etc, FM paging ability etc. Then you know what you're looking for. Otherwise it's a maze to look through all the different sorts and all their features.

IMHO the only thing a car alarm does

...is to satisfy your insurance company. If they are happy with the one you have fitted, all is well.

I have a Mongoose M80 series, and Shannons really like that - they told me so.

If you have a remote that has auto window closing, then you have something reasonably modern and probably quite effective. However, your insurer will probably want to know the make and model.

As for the protection, well nothing will deter the professional thief who really wants your car, except perhaps a 200kg bodybuilder who sleeps in your car with a shotgun across his knees.

just unbolt the towing point or cut the chain :p lol

did somebody say 200kg body builder sleeping in their car? I'm a little uncertain of that idea...

And drag the other tyre behind you? haha. Or more importantly, have you seen the crappy space saver we get? Not much fun for thieves having to stick to 80 km/h or blow a tyre haha.

And I don't know how many thieves (even determined ones) carry heavy duty bolt-cutters lol

    Ask your Insurer

Minimum requirement is usually a 3 or 4 point black-wired immobiliser.
    SEARCH will reveal many options.;)
A ZID, either from Zed4life or self-made, is possibly the best way to stop your Zed being stolen.

Well I remember a thread a couple of years back

..about what sort of stuff people found in their imported Zed.

A couple of people reported finding condoms, so all things must be possible in a Zed. :) :)

For some perhaps... I'm 6'4" and around 130kg... The only thing the condom would have done is keep my hand clean, because whatever it was I was doing would have been alone

Agree - good alarm system, 3-point immobiliser. Automatic immobolisation 30 seconds after car is turned off, even if you forget to set the alarm. Coupled with a ZID is the way to go.
