Ok... so today Captain Mark & I had the bright idea of pulling my Alpine CD head unit out of my old Toyota & putting it in his Zed. It seemed fitting that the Zed should take it's rightful place of having a great CD player instead of the old tape deck. All went well in fitting it until we turned the ignition on in the Zed & sparks started flying & smoke came out.
We were quick to rip the thing out, put it back in my car & it no longer works properly. The display functions & it switches through all the modes like it should but there is no sound output from it. That's not the prob at the mo' coz we're just sending it away to Alpine tomorrow for fixing, but after going for a short drive in the Zed tonight it seems we did more damage than just blow up my CD player. For one, Mark's old Kenwood tape deck won't seem to work now & it seems like the lights have shorted out or something. When we tried to turn on the "aeroplane lights" (the top interior lights closest to the windscreen) there was a brief flash in them & the door light on the dash comes on, but the top lights still stayed off.
The second interior lights, rear ones, just won't go on at all.We know the audio fuse blew - replaced it quickly but the tape deck still won't turn on.
We haven't had a chance to check all the other fuses as yet, but will in the daylight.
Just wondering if anyone has any idea of what the hell we've done in case it's not a simple case of changing fuses to make everything function again???!!!
And also what else we should look for that we may have done damage to?

    G'day

Yeah should just be the fuses, depends on what you hooked it up to, could have an inline fuse as well, a lot of audio guys sometimes hook another fuse in, in the daylight pull the deck out and check all wiring, sound lke you had a wire about face, should just be a fuse, check all. Need someone to have a look send me an email, changed a few in my life.

Probably burnt wires in there somewhere

along with a shitload of fuses. would also check the relays/fuses in the engine bay.

Yes I suspect we did have some of the...

...wires the wrong way around. In all the excitement of fitting it we didn't really check them first. Just kinda plugged it all in.
Rather embarrassed as I've pulled it in & out of my cars quite a few times so I should know better. Guess ya have to learn the hard way sometimes! :-0

If you had smoke & sparks >>

you have probably shorted the harness to the chassis (or to other wiring exposed by melted insulation). If you have several electrical problems, you need to get it to an Auto-electrician, FAST! Anymore poking around could see your Z burnt to the ground.8( 8( Cheers

Gave our local auto electrics a call this

arvy & explained the situation. They basically said to check all the fuses first & we should find the damage has stopped there. (hopefully!)He did mention something about a control relay maybe packing it in??? :!)
Dunno...Can't wait to get away from the office today so we can get to the Zed & start checking over everything!
