Car started leaking oil not long after standard oil change, got underneath and saw a small patch of oil on the gearbox housing, just after the sump..... thinking rear main, so send into Nissan, get quote for rear main...... get car back and they reckon that they fixed a 'power steering leak' and that they looked into a 'inspection' hole and could not see any leaking from rear main. But the car still drips from gearbox housing 1-3 drips over a week, just after each weekend drive....... What should I do next.... ignore the leak as normal? The mechanic was trying to tell me that zeds had a 'wet' engine and he had never been under a dry one.... but mine has not leaked for over 2 years :(   bit confused.

    "wet engine" my arse >>

no engine under normal conditions should leak oil unless it's a Jag as I'm sure those shit boxes were designed to leak oil.It could be your gearbox oil frothing up and leaking out the breather.

Well at that rate you're not likely to

run out of oil. The only engine that I know of that doesnt suffer from oil leaks is BMW. I had a 5 series had done 350,000 and was dry as a bone.My wifes 3 series is exactly the same but has fewer klms.
Mind you if you're happy to spend the money then go right ahead but whether a engine leaks oil or not is largely to do with design of oil scrolls and positioning of the gitz seals.
So you could replace the seal but after a while and a bit of wear and you might be back where you started from.My Z has an annoying leak from the front somewhere but I havent been able to locate it yet so I adopt the philosophy that its an anti corrosion device!

    Breather....

where is this located? That seems interesting because its always after a run that it leaks. The interesting point is that its real black sticky oil, which I find unusual especially after a recent oil change....Just ignore, or go into paranoid mode ?

if its only a few drips

then it might be better to leave it until you need a new clutch. Mine leaked for a year before I replaced it when I had the clutch done. Hard to justify the approx $400 labour to fix a slow leak.

    BlueZ Oldie but a goodie

    Key words 'recent oil change'

    First things to look at:
Check the oil level. Is it over full? If the level is to high, you can guarantee a leak from a perfectly good rear main seal. Drain a bit of the oil and the leak will stop.
Also check the bung. It's amazing how deceptive a bit of oil seeping from the bung can be. The oil gets blown back and collects on the bell housing. Get underneath and give it a good wipe. Check it every couple of days and wipe around the bung with your finger. If there's oil there, tighten the bung and/or replace the washer at the next oil change.
    See Ya,
    Garry

    Kalus Finally dug myself out

Is there an inspection cover??? I don't

remember seeing one. There is a plate between the bell housing and block but you can't get it out without unbolting the gearbox. Well, this is all from memory anyways :)

    how are the PCVs?

Ive heard that stuffed PCVs can cause the rear mail to fail too.

    red32 You talkin' to me?

I read somewhere that if a Jag engine

is not dropping about 1L of oil per 1000kms, then it's not put together properly!!!!

I've had my N/A for 15months now, and it's still as dry as a bone

then read both my posts there.
at first i thought it may be seals or somehitng, but turned out to be a breather valve problem, very easy cheap fix!
