Today in beautiful Victoria, we have thunderstorms. And I have no grip. I tried to launch at a set of lights, nothing spectacular, just getting moving. Might've been a slight incline. Mad wheelspin in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, even some in 4th. It was a truckload of fun, but it's not very safe. I had a similar issue last night, rampant wheelspin where I just didn't expect it. It seems to corner fine, but the rears just can't hold under acceleration. It's probably been like this since I got it, this could be the first time I've driven it in rain. Another thing I get is some vibration from the rear of the car between 60-80km/hr, though it seems to disappear after 5-10 mins of driving. Might be related. It's not a wheel alignment issue, as I've had the wheels changed since I got it, and the problem stayed the same. What could it be? Or should I just accept that my Z is now a drift pig, and treat it accordingly?
Oh also, I believe the tyres to be fine. But they're a bit of a mishmash, they came with the rims that are on the car, which were a bit of a mix'n'match. Still, I think they're fine, and the tyre place the other week sure didn't try and sell me any new ones I was sort of pinning it on whatever's causing that vibration. Something back there isn't right. Maybe I'm looking at it too hard.
Mish mash of what? I've had Federal's with heaps of tread that had no grip in the wet. Behind a NA too. I've got Potenza Adrenalin RE001's and they are quite good in the wet on my TT. Quality tyres will work a lot better in the wet. If you have the crappiest rockstones, or admirals or whatever the cheap nasty tyres are these days you will have trouble.
Must be The 1000 killer wasps of power you have, spinning the wheels in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th and the tyres are good, gimmee a break. As Chrispy says, get some good tyres, drive to the conditions and we will all be a lot safer.
Mish mash of aids. I have a Bob Jane Xenon and a Blue Streak Stiletto :| And a pair of sweet Nexens on the front. Edit: drive to the conditions! Sif! Skids all day, all weather. Considering my last Z ate a tree on a wet road, good tyres might be the wise choice.
It has NEVER been advisable(or legal)to have two different tyre brands or tread patterns on the same axle(i.e. both front, or both rear). Get a PAIR of new tyres for the rear asap!!!
Gaaaaaay. Bob Jane coulda done something! Don't like having to sacrifice good tyres just because they aren't all the same.
I guess it all comes down to how much your life(and the lives of other road-users)is really worth to you. At the very least, you could total your car(all for the sake of saving the cost of some decent tyres). If your insured and have a serious claim, the insurance company will certainly inspect the tyres fitted to the wreckage(it's a great way to avoid liability).
Just spent $800 all up on Falken ZE912's nice quiet 'A symetrical tyres... So far really good in the wet.... Don't ever skip on quality of tyres and brakes on performance cars, or for that matter heavy cars! Sure stick some mix 'n' matchers on a civic or lancer but not on larger cars. Even if there seems to be tread on the tyres they may of gone hard, therefore not performing like they should.....get new tyres all round! Plus yeah, drive to conditions Your vibes coming from the car will be your drive shaft center bearing, and/or worn joints, oh and maybe hardened up rubber mounts in the rear end...
Don't even start on my throttle control. Not even covered by insurance, that's quite the bitch. You know what, I might get some new tyres.
Check the tyre pressure. And the vibration of rear wheel in wet condition comes, if you have too much tyre pressure. I think it should be 32 in all wheels.
I spent a small fortune trying to get power to spin in all gears . Pm me if you want to do and engine swap .
What I mean is, CHILI says that if I crash on those tyres, they won't cover it. I'm insured like a boss, but apparently with the tyres how they are it's worth nuth. The vibration is in all conditions, they aren't over-inflated. Turns out it's real easy. I reckon your local Bob Jane could do the same for you.
THERE YOU GO! You said you had your tyres replaced - did you just have them fitted and balanced? Or did you also pay for an electronic wheel alignment?
Which Federals did you have Chrispy? The 595RS-R? I've got the Federal 595 (not RS-R) and found them pretty good in all conditions.
4 something something (452??). Can't remember exactly. When they were new they weren't too bad, but after a while they got crap pretty quick. A mate had the 595RS's on his TT years ago and I found them to be ok.
