Hi all great website. i am new to the forum and nrw to the Z32 i purchased a 92 TT z32 about 2 weeks ago it looks great and handles well and i never had any faults until today

what happend was when i turned it off the turbo timer didnt activate and the car turned off straight away. when i tried to start it later it took a fair few times and once started was very jerky and was popping and backfiring. i pulled over and left it for a while thought it might be flooded but now it wont start at all the fuel seems to be priming i ca hear the pump but no spark. and unfortunatly im not real mecanicly minded when it comes to these engines ive always had v8S

if anyone can offer any ideas or know a good mechanic on the northside bris
it would be much appreciated :)

"Power Transistor Unit" (PTU) located on the front of the engine on the drivers side - mounted on the plastic timing belt cover. It will be either a black box (Series 2 PTU) which is the newer version, or a silver box with ridges (Series 1 PTU) which is prone to malfuncion with age. If you have the old version it could be causing misfiring and the cause of your problems - therefore throw it out and get a S2 PTU. If you have the newer Series 2 PTU, then its not the PTU causing the problems, and you may have to look elsewhere.
Just thought I would give you this info, as new owners of zeds dont always understand the abbreviated terms PTU, and where to look for it.

Welcome to the world of Z ownership. It's more a journey.Reading your post fully i'm feeling that you have an issue that the turbo timer not counting down ? is that what you mean. If so it might be a turbo timer related issue. Also before you go to far check your injectors - coils - p.t.u - and c.a.s connectors for corrosion as Z's do get alot of faults that are related to corrosion of the various connectors under the bonnet. Sometimes a good clean of connectors will fix but most times replacement of connectors is the best. If you can use or have a mate that can use a soldering iron it isn't that hard.
There are some good Z mechanics up your way and i'm sure someone will post you a link soon.
    Cheers Dave

B-MAN, Zeds flood easily too, then are a B!TCH to start. If you do have a PTU or connector fault and the engine is misfiring or you are cranking the engine and it doesn't want to start, it will be getting unburned fuel on the plugs, and they won't want to fire. The only cure is to wait a while or remove the plugs and dry them out.

Welcome to the world of owning a 300ZX

I have had my car for not even 3 months. So far i have had to fix:

    > Heater core (just bypassed the f-er)
    > Radiator Hoses
    > Drivers side Mirror
    > Headlight
    > Cracked Tail Light

Now honestly, most of those problems just came with the car. But the Zed is an extremely technical car, with a bitch of an engine to work on. You have many MANY more mishaps to come.

Weigh up whether it is worth keeping the car, knowing these faults CAN happen (and if you love your ride as much as any of us do, you will know straight away its worth keeping) and when you decide that it is worth keeping, cos you WILL decide that, the first priority is to make sure you have had the 100,000km service.

When you get the PTU changed ask for a 100,000km service. If your car hasnt had one, it will cost a bit, but it is one of the smartest things you can do for your cars health.

Just a bit of free advice from a newbie Zedder.

Jeeez relax, don't be so doom and gloom, after going through two different zeds the most radical thing i've ever had to get done was the 20 year old rear main seal on my first zed which i knew was stuffed when i bought it... Look after your car and she'll look after you, this means regular maintenance and dont skimp on servicing(like any other car ;))
