i bought tyres off sandeep about 2 years ago..

was a second hand set they he wanted to get rid off.. and i needed some decent rubber..

i had Maxxis MA-V1- 235/45/17 on the front and i thought they where amazing.. i could slam the breaks in the wet and the back would slide out (Nankang NS2- 255/40/17) and the front would just grip.

i would highly recommend the maxxis MA-V1's if they are still being made.

apparently for a little extra.. the maxxis MA-z1's are a fair bit better..

but from other forums people say the Kumho Ecsta KU31's is slightly better than both the maxxis...

    My tyres....

Renee, I have Maxxi's MA-Z1s on the front of my NA. If I still have the car when the dunlops on the rear need replacing, I will get the Maxxi's MA-Z1s for the rear as well...

I think they are quite tyre. Quiet, grip nicely in both wet and dry and not too expensive.... thats been my experience with them....

Also a big fan of the Goodyear Eagle F1's. Had them on my NA a few years back (they are still on my stock rims in the shed). I would gladly get them again, but they are quite pricey.

Thanks guys for all you help in the matter, Renee has sourced some Nexan N3000s for $200ea and due to time constraints and needing the car back on the road ASAP, has gone with these and is booked in now for Monday. :)

    Cheers,

Yes thank you all for your help..If I ever need tyres again..I'll be looking up this thread again :)...

aazn - Yeah you can still get the Maxxis MA-V1s, when I called Jax they are still able to source them, but did also say that the Maxxi's MA-Z1s are a slightly better tyre then the V1s..as you stated...He also mentioned the Maxxis i-pro, never heard of it (but its again a step up from the MA-Z1s)...

Either way, I think the Nexens N3000s will be a huge improvement compared to my current el-cheapo ones..

I'm needing to upgrade my tyres too. 235/45/17 Maxxis MA-V1's on the rear are just not cutting it.

DinoZ: How many K's are you seeing for the KU31's compared to the KU36's?

I'm seriously considering the KU36's. **** tire longevity. The extra grip can be the difference between a near miss and skidding into a wall.

I've begun to notice that MA-V1s are dangerous on a shift kitted auto TT.

I may have to agree with some of what Altari is saying. I see a few people are going for the MA-V1s. They're an ok tyre if your driving isn't too aggressive and you don't do too many Ks. They're very cheap so very attractive on a second car. We had some on a VY Commodore.

    Watch for:

    - Grip - Keep 'em pumped up slightly above recommended PSI to get better grip out of them. Some advanced driving schools recommend this anyway but you'll notice it more with the MA-V1's.

    - Twin Turbo 300ZXs. Don't put 'em on. You'll drive into a tree.

    - Wear (if you use the car as a daily driver). 'Cause they're cheaper, the rubber compound ain't as good. Our last set lasted well under 40,000km. So, if your Zed is a daily driver, the cost savings are cancelled out in the long run compared to getting a performance tyre anyway. In that respect, it's like buying a cheap can opener. You can buy 1 good one or break 3 cheap ones. You pay the same amount in the long run.

They're a good tyre for the money on a second car (that isn't doing too many km's and especially if you drive pretty tamely). Go for it if the budget is tight. You won't be dissapointed.

Could I ask you what price you paid for the Nexens? Never used 'em before but I'm gonna sell my 1964 EH (no more room in the garage) and was thinking of putting a set of these on it to get the RWC. I know I could put cheaper tyres on but I want the car looking good too.

I was looking at the el cheapo brands like Maxxis, Federal and Nexens on 17" rims. I hear they're all good bang for buck but I've only used Maxxis out of the 3.

I got the Nexen N3000s...they were $200 each for the 225/40/18s

Not a bad price for low profile tyres on 18s!! You usually get performance tyres for 50% more.

    Thanks for the info. :)

I think BennyC is running KU31s - check with him as to what sort of km he is getting. Think the hardness rating of KU31 is 300 as compared to KU36 at 180.

You wont be disappointed with the KU36, grip is excellant and price is great. Technically not as perfect in manufacturing as say a Dunlop Direzza, so the tyre guy will probably whinge about it being hard to get the balance right.

Mine have had a pretty good workout this year with 13 track days, 2 return trips to Sydney (1500km each), 1 to PI (3700km), Zedfest at Easter (600km), and about 5,000km as a daily driver; I was not expecting to see the year out on one set, but they still have a few more km left in them.

Balance is still good, with fairly even wear, but I only run neg 0.75 degrees of camber on both front and rear. I usually reset to neg 3 degrees for trackwork and this accelerates the wear on the front inside edges.

They are very soft in the sidewall so you do need to run them above 35psi.
Last round of the hillclimb I ran with street camber settings and 38psi and managed to set a new PB, so there are a few different ways to skin a cat.

Really recommend Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin. Have had a really good run with these both great grip and last well (28,000 Km out of the rears and the fronts then went to the back at maybe 40%).

If anyone is after Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE001s, here are a few prices from Bridgestone:

    $220 each for 16"
    $325 each for 18"

Less if you buy 4 as a package ofcourse (e.g. $200 each for 16"). Just getting some put on the Zed today. Agree with Mr Trickle. They are a fantastic tyre especially on a high performance car.

Incidentally, I priced the Bridgestone Potenza RE050s on 18" today too (just out of curiosity). Over $500 per tyre!!!!

How do Federal 595s compare to the Maxxis? I got 595s for $181ea for 265/30R19 which means 18s would've been a hell of a lot cheaper than Maxxis...

595? which series? SS, EVO, RS?

They're pretty good tired for the price, i did a big read up about them in comparison to the Kumho KU31 and 36, also the Bridgestone RE001s.

SS is good for a every day driver type with a squirt ever so often.
RS is better for more often squirts than every day driving.
EVO good for all above and track work.

    SS wear well
RS wear well but a bit quicker
EVO again, well but quicker again.

But all subjective to road conditions, driving type, camber, size of rims, blah blah blah.

Overall you cant fault them, they're sold world wide and are used on cars ranging from sedans to sportscars to blitzy german hatches.

Maxxis just have a larger name out there and because of it they have a good product basis to back it up.

Im using kumho ku31's atm and also cant fault them.

Well SS, but they're just called the 595 now. I've used them on 17s before but wanted to know how they compare to Maxxis...

Well there are maxxis tires and there is maxxis tires. Without a specific type, its hard to say.

No doubt someone will pirk up with a model type for comparison.

ps, hows the v8 install going? havent looked at your build for a while.
