i recently installed the PTU upgrade on mine & a friends zeds. Had no trouble with mine but friends car just misfires when trying to start, tried his module on my car and it did the same thing, contacted store where purchased them from and was told they have issues with some 300zx's shorting out the PTU.So he will not replace it, Was wondering if anyone has had this problem, also friends car has killed 3 of the older type PTU's in 2 years where mine has never failed only replaced it for reliability reasons
I've only ever heard of one series two PTUs being dead on installation in the past. I definately haven't heard of multiple issues with cars shorting them out.
If you bought it new.... ...they MUST replace it. I've heard very few issues with S2 PTU's, he's telling you porkies IMO.
That's a bit weird... I'd be checking the earths. The S1 had some issues, but never that bad. It is possible that your mates car has 'issues' and killed the S2 PTU, but I haven't heard of dodgy earths affecting the S2 like that. Maybe it's just a noob mistake to leave the earth off and most have had a S1 at the time.
Start by checking the integrity of the connector- The PTU has a earth pin, and the other pins relate to different cylinders. A misfire on a New PTU would be either a dead PTU (unlikely) or a wiring fault. Ensure that the female-type pins on the wiring harnesses are secure and not being pushed out when you plug it in. I encountered a similar problem with my PTU, so may be worth a look. Egg, Interested to know why the seller must refund the PTU, I'm thinking that a claim to the electrical integrity of the vehicle would void all implied warranties?
Ummm, it's the law. Simply saying I wont replace this because Z's blow them is not right. In this country you have a right to a refund or replacement providing the goods are new. But then again, if our Z's were in fact constantly blowing these I'd feel different, this is NOT the case.
... ...is that really a surprise? They're nearly 20 years old now and have an inherent issue already. To simply tell him "we've had issues" and refuse to replace them is a cop out in my opinion... you think we would have heard about these issues on here yes? With this said, double check the pins.
If they installed the units he is entitled to a refund. If he installed them him self he should get nothing. If easy enough to check the earthing system. Just disconnect the PTU and do some measurements.
Ive supplied well over 50 S2PTU's and not one failure (as long as u follow my simple wiring instructions.) the only time a S2PTU fails is when its not earthed properly, judging by ur mates car id def say he has that problem, bad earth will kill both types of ptu real quick. Trev
