I have heard two new rules lately and I'm not sure if they will only apply to WA, or to all areas...

[1] IT will not be illegal to have any aftermarket steering wheel. Punishable by a $500 fine and 3 demerits and perhaps a defect notice

[2] Radar detectors are now illegal. A fine up to a maximum of $2000 may be issued (maybe higher fines for truckies?)

Anyone heard about these new laws?

    Interesting...

Haven't heard about Point 1. Sounds rather silly to me.

Point 2. They want to make them illegal but they aren't yet. The bill hasn't even gone through parliament. They have been trying to make them illegal for years!!!

So point one means we can't have aftermarket steerers at all?

Should read 'these will NOW be illegal' not 'these will not be...'

On point 2, can anyone provide links or info for radar decectors in Aus? What features do good detectors have etc?

im not sure about the law about the steering wheels, i have heard that it is a offence to replace a steering wheel that has a air bag in it with a aftermarket unit.

perhaps the first clarification should be whether we are talking about

state (w.a.) or federal laws ...?????:unsure:

Both of those laws are bullshit.

New steering wheel without air bag is what 630$ US from COZ, and 74.50$ for the face, so over 700$ US. I believe the airbag version is some even more ridiculous price. Sometimes, it just makes more sense to go for the aftermarket equipment, and why the people who are trying to bring these laws into existance can't see this I'll never understand.

In regards to radar detectors, well, citizens will always be fighting a losing battle against the police and revenue raising.

    WA state laws ...

they were talking about making radar detectors illegal while I was over there at Xmas. They have LONG been illegal in Vic and NSW - the NSW cops took my detector and $789.00 of my hard earned during the 90's at some point. I wasn't even speeding - woulda been cheaper to have had no detector and be pinged for 50k over the limit :thumbsdown:.

Radar Detectors have been illegal in NSW for at least 20 yrs.

Recently, my next door neihbour had his Hyundai Excel damaged whilst parked at the shopping centre. The insurance company refused to pay the claim, because the car had an aftermarket steering wheel, and the Police put a Defect Notice on it as well. All this after buying the car NEW from a local Hyundai Dealer.

That's a massive crock. A steering wheel has nothing to do with being hit

    in a carpark while parked.

There has to be some causal link between the modification and the accident.

However, having known someone who worked for one particular insurer, there is a set percentage of claims that they will flat out refuse for no real reason at the outset, and then ifyou complain will re-assess the relative merits of contesting if it's worth their time/money to do so - while at the same time, knowing that the insured party also has to assess their own loss and decide whether it's worth taking on the insurer.

In hindsight, I was pretty lucky with my claim (23, in a modified r33gts-t, at fault).

    Basically, they're bastards [end rant].
