On monday night (31st), NDSOC hosted a motorkana and sprints night. It was designed for both newbies and experts, with the newbies encouraged to attack the motorkana first, followed by some sprints on the track. Heaps and heaps of nice cars, mainly nissans, but a few special ones as well such as mustangs and a GT40. Representing aus300zx was WYKKED, Blondie, Blipman, zxtt-1, Redzedmikey and Reaper. All had heaps of fun, even if the organisation left something to be desired. Anyway, once again, I was club photographer. Below are some pics and video that I took..

This mustang was one of my faves. Loud and fast. Brilliant.

Didnt take long for people to start hitting the motorkana while the experts went and hit the track. The idea being to complete a designated course with the quickest time possible. Some people did it succesfully, others just started doing donuts and burnouts when the witches hat course got too confusing..:)

No sprints photo's unfortuneatly as we weren/t next to the track and it started to get dark. But below are some medium quality vids of the motorkana. They're big files, but not a prob for cable users. Enjoy.

It did I guess. Event post mortem....

Thanks for the pics and vids Mark. The catch can worked fine in that there was no blue smoke screen, however it is still basically dry so whatever may have caused problems in the past wasn't happening.

I did a 1:21 in the first session, my best time in my old Z was 1:14.5.... *Sigh* it would take SO much cash to get the Sky80 anywhere near as fast as my old near stock Z :(

The second session was not so successful, after coming out of hard right hand corners (namely turn 1 and the entry to the straight) the car would suddenly die and start spluttering and then eventually get going again, given that it's while in right hand corners and the fuel pump is on the right of the tank I think it's suffering from fuel surge. The pump in the car is now the third pump it's had (the original pump, an R34 pump in Japan, and now this one which is from a Silvia) and I am starting to suspect is not installed properly. The car runs out of fuel when the gauge still reads about 1/8th of a tank left so I think the pick up isn't right, which is why it's suffering from starvation when the level gets lowish and all the petrol sloshes to the left on right hand corners. Bugger.

Wykked was behind me on one such episode and when it finally did kick in again after spluttering I was getting some flame and glowing chunkoids out of the exhaust, which sounds bad however I suspect the glowing bits are the remains of the turbo/manifold gasket which has a leak, and I'm getting a very characteristic sound from then engine now which this gasket makes when loose (I know, this is the 3rd CA18 I've heard make this sound).

Otherwise the car was good, it's understeering less than before but there's still some work to do there, under brakes it was excellent, as long as it can keep the braking performance up after more than the mere 3 hot laps in a row it got I'll be really happy. The fuel surge needs work and the gasket needs to be replaced and it should be ready to go again, temps didn't get above 85 degrees so the engine's up to it.

    Great pics Mark.......>>

As usual. After a bit of a shaky start to the night (from an organisational point of view) it turned out to be quite a good night. I would have liked to have had more then two sessions on the track, but I also wanted to give Jen as much track time on the motorkahana course as possible. Unfortunately only the guys who got to drive the track will be able understand the next bits...... but how good did it feel to get the backend loose coming over the rise on the back straight? or how about trying to thread your way through the kink at full speed in the dark when you can't see either apex until you are right on it?

    Damn, I love track days.

I think we all came out of it in one piece too, although Jack did overheat and spew a heap of coolant after his second track session so maybe there is a little work to be done there. Jen is already talking about getting another car so the kids can start competeing in motorkahanas, but I think what she really wants is a car she can use.:thumbsup:

    Hehe oh yeah, the kink

I remember from doing it in the Z you can do that kink quite easily with the foot flat down (anyone who wasn't, trust me you can). First time around in the friggin pitch black I couldn't quite see it until I was right on top of it and to try and keep in as straight a line as possible I hit the first ripple strip pretty hard with the wheels on the very inside edge of the strip. This launched the car HARD, I'm pretty sure it got on two wheels, gave me a nice little fright that one :)

  14. zxtt-1

    zxtt-1 mechanically inept

Nearly came unstuck at that "kink"

but the car actually made it around ok. Car's at Nisport at the moment for a diagnostic and the news ain't good at all. Looks like a water leak at the back of the motor above the gearbox, also some exhaust gasses detected around the passenger side. So motor out and pulldown and then the bills will start to arrive I'm sure. Also looks like the passenger front calleper is siezed which would explain a lot. Sigh - never ends doesn't. :(:(

ps - excellent pics Mark as usual.:thumbsup:

Great fun ... few more pix ... and HELP ME, Jedi >>>

Jedi-san, at home I can't see any of your pix - all I get is red crosses. I can see all the pix here at work. From memory, there is some security key I have to set up or something ... can you post, PM, or email me the details. Cheers, Mikey.

Anyway, as Wykked said, mmmmmm, ya gotta luv track days! And after Monday, I think I love motorkhanas too , I thought RedZed might be a bit of a slug around the witches hats, but Benny the Blip only got a faster time than me by tagging a cone. I didnt try the handbrake at all, but used a fair bit of throttle steering  and I want more of this action. Guess while some of the Vics are Berri-ing, I'll try to uphold some Z honour at DECA on the upcoming SAU day.

The track session was fun but mildly disappointing as well. I was running the stock speed limited ECU, but was hitting the limiter with 190 on the clock a fair bit earlier on the straight - thats what 12psi will do compared to 9psi last time around here. However, my overall times were 1-2 sec slower, most probably due to a bit of subconscious backing off on the back section - at night there really wasn't a lot of vision there ... the lights focus on the main straight for the drags, with virtually nothing on the back where all the right-lefts are. At the drivers briefing we were told to go at 80% on that section - but I don't think anyone did! My fave spot was flattening out the kink .

There was only 1 witness (Jack), but I'll lay claim to the best prang of the night ... running!!! Over the loudspeaker came the message that were 3 spots left on the grid for the last run of the night, so I flew towards the car - a bit too literally - tripping over something and landing on my right shoulder, hip and knee ... it's all still sore .

A minor bit of follow uo drama - yesterday my master cylinder shat itself, leaving me with about 10% of my brakes ... better in the work car park that at the end of Calder's front straight 2 days earlier! It had only been on the car just over a year, so we're trying for a warranty claim :angry:. Jack, hope yours isn't too bad a problem - did you continue losing coolant after Monday??? #89 and #90 were reunited at Nissport today pending resolution of the brakes issue.

Jack, after trying to do a deal, once he found out the GT40 did have air conditioning.

One of the NDSOC club members has bought one of the old Gibson Motorsport R31 Skylines, with a big-mumbo FJ20 up front. I think he went off track a couple of times, he's got a whole new level of power to get used to .

Lastly here's me about to be counted down on another motorkhana run - great fun!

Looking forward to the next action day :thumbsup::thumbsup:, cheers RZM.

    mikey....

not much I can do I think, but yes you may not be able to see the pics due to the stupid Monash security certificates. If it comes up with a message about certificates, click on "accept this certificate permanently". They wont harm your computer, its just stupid Monash security stuff. I fear you may have at one point clicked on "never accept this certificate" and now you cant view the pics. If thats the case, I'm not sure how to correct that. You could try another web browser. If IE explorer is not working, try mozilla firefox (easy to find and download in google), or visa versa. Or alternatively, download Netscape 8 (thats what I use) which combines both IE explorer and Mozilla firefox, so you retain the functionality of IE explorer and also the added security of Mozilla firefox. Hope this helps.

    Cheers
