    Subzer0 Test Your Might!

    Hi guys,

Looking at doing a major service in the next 18 months on my '90 NA manual slicktop. As of now it also has a problem with a lifter tick I can't shake so will be doing lifter replace/rebuild as well.

Before then I will be installing TTZ extractors, k&n air filter and probably twin thermo fans.

I figure if I'm going that deep I nay as well do some upgrading while I'm at it. Thinking of doing the following:

    100k service kit
    Lightweight underdrive pulleys
    All nessecary deletes and bypasses
    New vct sprockets
    JWT mild cams
    Lifters
    Springs?
    Mild head work?
    Nistune

Not going the forced induction path, just want a nice bulletproof daily NA.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers,
    Joel

TT Heads, shaved for higher comp for sure :zlove:

    That could work :)

Amy sense going to TT injectors or would I the stock NA injectors handle alright?

Can't hurt, can probably get them for free too. Just if you do, get them flow tested and all that jazz.

Plus going the nistune path. I would.

You won't make enough power to max the NA injectors so no point in TT injectors. Yeah my car has TT heads and is around 10.8:1 comp :D

No point unless you car actually needs more fuel. Bigger injectors aren't going to give you any more HP and these engine run rich from the factory. It will probably just take longer to tune the nistune which = more money.

It's the same old thing though - do you research first (I own a TT so im just going off a quick search i just did)

The smaller injectors will give you better economy too, whether its noticeable over a TT injector is anyone's guess though.

Mild cams shouldn't need springs unless specified by the manufacturer. If you put big springs in, it takes more power from your motor to open them.

Make sure you spend the money on a GOOD exhaust system that is designed to work with the headers.

NA's are 10.5:1 stock, you mustn't have taken much off them? From what I have read the compression difference in the TT comes from the turbos running dish pistons?

Wasn't done by me and yes the comp difference is in the pistons. But it makes a difference ;)

Steer clear of TT injectors, they will flow too much fuel and even with a custom tune you may well still have all sorts of problems overfueling at low revs and idle.

I'd be doing a bit of solid research before you upgrade the springs too, if you are not going for crazy cams of high revs you may well be fine with out them.

Had a look on at the specs from JWT and standard springs are fine with the mild cams.

    So now I'm thinking

    This:
200000k service kit w/ underdrive pulleys
    JWT mild cams
    Head work
    Lifter replace/rebuild
    Nistune
    thermo fans
    Lightweight flywheel

With what I already have installed/ready to go on:
    TTZ extractors
    K&N pod filter
    Full exhaust high flow cats
    Z1 one piece driveshaft

Might be looking at swapping to a low k S2 short block as well.

Anything in there I shouldnt have or anything I've missed?

Would be interesting to see what a 13:1 compression VG30 can do.

Seems reasonable to me, if you don't have one already a good 2.25" exhaust system would be worth it too.

Some research would be worth while for the thermofans too, some people have got them working well, plenty of people have not so if you are going to go with them make sure you get it right.

Personally I'd just get the underdriven crank pulley rather than the full set but that's a personal prefference that suits my situation, not neccessarily what will be best for you.

Might as well run it on Roo 100 at least you know you are getting some sort of consistancy out of the fuel then. I read your thread on flex and it looks like a good idea. But i also read the thread on SAU and the extreme varience in the quality of the fuel it seems a bit hit and miss. At what alcahol content level does it start not being worth the hassel? From what eye sore, he got 30rwkw only on the race fuel E85 that was completely consistant and he drained the tank for that.

Bought a low km '97 engine from Decoy :)

My mechanic is closing down shop soon so the build has been pushed forward to the start of July. This really limits my budget and I need to get the engine in, so my question is:

How much gain am I really going to get with the mild cams over the stock s2?

Is the porting really necessary? I was quoted about $1000, can't afford that and cams and labour and rego in a month :(

Would I be better off with either cams or a match port and polish or are they kind of obsolete without each other?

Still worth using Nistune with fully exhaust, and bolt on mods?

the cams by themselves should give you a gain, not as much as if you did the port and polish as well, but you will still see a gain.

Chuck a set of TT Cylinder heads on with a set of mild cams, trust me you won't regret it.

Might just do the cams for now and upgrade the heads in the future. Probably end up getting a bike if I feel I need higher acceleration :) have to be Kawasaki so I can still have a fast ZX  :zlove:
