So i probably should of started a build thread a few weeks ago but i didn't expect so much to get done in such a short time.

So a coupe weeks back i drove to Melbourne and acquired Nigel300's Slicktop 91tt.

Neat inside and out, blew smoke, engine ticked.

Got it home, compression tested which showed fine bar cylinder 4 which had 2 shot lifters.

So started pulling the engine. You know that annoying bolt at the back of the ac compressor that you need a crows foot to get to? Well i took it off in about an hour with this :)

After going thru the Nissan service receipts id decided that the passenger turbo seal was blown.

Taking off that side intercooler confirmed that.

Replaced the lifters and started taking the timing belt and exhaust header off.

At this point i got to finally have a look at the turbos
    and so can you [YT]HrgOmgW4LsQ[/YT]

So im yet to put the timing belt back on and retest compression but if its still down on that cylinder im guessing that the debris from the turbo has wrecked it.

    back to work for now

So ive got a heap of dirty parts that needed cleaning, mostly the exhaust manifold and water pipes.

I had them soaking in a bucket of warm water and high strength radiator flush, with a touch of degreaser.

When the water went cold i had an idea...

I make these gasifying wood stoves out of old gas bottles that produce alot of heat.

I put half a keg ontop and poured in my parts :)

left it for a few hours then took out the parts and pressure washed them

The rest should just fall off with a wire pipe cleaner.

Its there at the end of my first post embedded. Isn't it? Only made one vid.

My first go at embedding sooo...

    [YT]HrgOmgW4LsQ[/YT]

Or did you mean the vid of me pulling the stainless wire wheel out of my
stomach after emerging from under your zed?

Will you rebuild your turbo's or replace?

I was lucky enough to buy sansouskes old set when I first joined.

I cant spell your name at the best of times sorry.
Let's hope the old girls still have a few months of full boost in them.

I know hey, passenger side has broken in, drivers side just needs a little use to bed in. Maybe I'llput a hammer drill on the core. Gurney spins them up nicely too.

Farr out, they are bad. I was thinking it was just a blown seal when I sold it to you!

After changing some lifters and doing another compression test it seems that the rings have gone on cylinder 4 also...

:( this news makes these (loosely termed) investments a costly adventure.

Planning on just getting some rings for it, or snow ball it into a ring, hone, bearing job?

I HATE COMPRESSION TESTING FULL STOP!

Ok so ive done a test in car, tested out of car with starter on bell-housing

    Both times #4 low comp.

Replaced lifters with firm ones, which involved doing my first timing belt. Hardest part was prying back the hydraulic auto tensioner then rocking the belt back and forth till is equally tensioned (The belt likes to go loose between the two intake cam gears.
The replaced firm lifters went soft after a few rotations. :(

    Low comp on #4 still.

Had enough, decided id go the s2 route.
Tested by trying to do a comp test on my s2 by turning the engine with a breaker. Not a good enough reading, but noticed quite a bit of leaking on the intake side.

Went back to the engine with low comp on #4 and all of a sudden its pulling 155+!
Checked other cylinders and they were all over the place now?!?!
Got a fresh battery, sprayed some lanolin on the intake and exhaust valves and tried again.

Still iffy but #4 sounds nice under compression now, no more DOONK noise..(sounded better even before spraying oil down the intake)

One of the soft lifters was getting firmer(exhaust side)

I think my tester is stuffed, but im now trying to decide if i should use the s1 engine or s2.

Fingers crossed the s1 is ok, and im just going off what ive been told about the s2's history, im not sure if it was boosted hard but im sure the block has gotten hotter than the s1 (melting det sensor)

233k on the s1, 140ish k on the s2.......... Looking thru Coz now...

    What to do.

Got to work on my exhaust manifolds which im going to wrap.
Shaved off the shield mounts and cleaned them up ready for some ceramic based paint.

Unfortunately the only colour in store was blue, but it all gets covered over with black silicon in the end so i couldn't give a flying Smurf.

Very happy with the result but after working around these engine for a bit now im starting to see a trend...

Passenger side gets a flogging, turbo always goes first, runs hotter and to top things off the stock manifolds have a stupid egr bung on the side that has the most restrictive flow to the turbo already!

As if the bend they put in so you could get to the bolt there wasn't enough of a blockage!

Pics to follow if anyone's interested enough..

Ive had enough free time to be able to finish the wrapping on my exhaust manifolds.

Also managed to remove the cams and lifters from the passenger side head and give everything a good clean.

Dissembled the lifters and checked everything over.

Manifolds look good -curious though why do all that instead of using the heat shields?

In all seriousness tho i wanted to clean up the engine bay, and i thought that wrapping would be more effective at keeping engine bay temps down.

There wrapped in DEI Titanium wrap and coated in VHT blue ceramic and DEI Black high temp silicon.
