I've had this issue before. Think I just reformatted to fix it that time. I really don't want to have to do that again. Basically, everytime it goes to "My Computer" it tries to search and can't find for like a minute, until it works fine up until the point I view My Computer again. I've scanned with Defender. Nothing found. I have 80% free on that partition. HDD is defragged every night continuously for 2 hrs. eTrust Antivirus scans every night. I'd link it to recently install software if it was someone else's computer, but my computer is left on for weeks on end, so I can't pinpoint it very easily. Any suggestions?
Network issues. If you used to have or currently have shared drives with other computers then My Computer will attempt to find them for a bit until it gives up. There will be a way in the registry to turn the time it searches down from the few seconds it currently is to something lower, but I'm not sure where. Probably best to Google around for the registry key you need to alter. This is the most likely cause. If you have never had any sort of network setup (including friends over to LAN, since that can count) then I'm not sure. Try some of the other spyware searchers. I recommend Adaware by lavasoft and the spyware scanner AVG has.
I get this with my stupid burner if I have a format its not happy with it will do that till its ready to tell me there is nothing in the drive. It or so happens when one of my 200g HDD turns off (one of them has a dry joint in it ) but the PC always looks for it and will hang for a minute or so while it waits for the reply or time out . this my not be ur problem but I think it will be something simular. It is trying to sorce information form something that is broken or corrupted so it just keep trying till it times out then ignores it but every time you open my computer it will try to read the corrupted file again and will hang again
Exactly...try using "tweakXP" this program may have somewhere that allows you to change the seek time without having to go into regedit
