Hey guys, my battery doesn't hold charge since i changed the spark plugs. I don't know if its the alternator or cause of the spark plugs. I had to get it jump started twice and clutch start once just today. I even tried starting it as soon as I turned off the engine after 40min drive but it still wouldn't start. Wont even turn over. Parked it on the top of my hill so i can start it tomorrow any help would be appreciated!! anything i should check?? thanks a lot
It's nothing to do with spark plugs. Get an auto sparky to load-test battery and check charge rate from alternator.
hmmm I'll check out the alternator and the battery tomorrow. The thing is it was fine before the spark plugs were changed and it is running on all 6. All i hear is a ticking noise(im guessing the spark plugs) when i try to start it but there is enough charge for the sound system and the dome lights to work(I turned everything off when i tried stating it tho) When my old cars battery died nothing works... that's why I'm a bit puzzled. Thanks for the quick reply guys
If the alt light is not on the dash, then I would assume it's a dead cell in the batt. Measure the voltage, will probably be around 10V I reckon Should be 12V+.
The ticking is the starter motor solenoid trying to operate the throwout gear to start the car. You need a good charge to make that thing work, much more than a stereo or lights. The ticking is a sure sign of a dead battery. Now you need to find out why it is dead, as per the above. One other reason, of course, is that the battery has passed the end of its useful life and will no longer hold a charge. That happens to all batteries eventually. a new one is the only solution for that. As Chrispy said, if the battery registers 10V or less - it has gone to God.
If the engine runs when you clutch start it, then there is nothing wrong with the Alternator(all power to sustain the engine comes from the Alternator). The battery is removed from that function once the engine is running and the Alternator then provides additional power to recharge the battery(if the battery is dead/dying then that recharge won't happen). New battery time, methinks.
yup i think i just need a new battery... I've called like 4 places up and the cheapest i could find was $150 but there's a wholesaler guy on ebay selling 550cca for $60 cheaper & free courier it will get here this week but i need to drive around now. I was wondering if I can put my dads hiace vans battery in(the engines blown & its just sitting there). Its rated 400cca and near new but the one I've got on my car is 530cca. Will it be alright if i ran it on the van battery for few days?? what batteries are you guys running on?? my cars NA btw. thanks guys
do you know the cca for the battery you used??? I just don't want anything to screw up if I put a lower cca rated battery.
Try battery world, I got one from there for $120 with 650cca about 6 months ago. Alternatively, the 400cca one you already have is not ideal but would probably work OK. Might as well try it since its there.
just bought a 520cca battery for $140 from Autobarn and it goes good so far. We'll see in about a week i guess if it holds charge etc. My speedo was screwed up now its working too lol. Thanks for the replies everyone
