Today I replaced the A/C compressor, that was just pain! Second in line would have to be my experience with removing the EGR fully for the first time. Such simple tasks, however being a z32 it can be like a trip to the sun with the little to no space. Love hate relationships! Just wondering what you've guys have come across in your experiences with working on a z32.
Steering rack bushings with the engine in. edit: in hindsight it would of been faster to drop the cross member but I didn't.
1) Resealing the thermostat housing to block joint. 2) Sump removal and replacement, engine in on a TT is FUN
When fitting my beloved new EGR with the engine in (yes it is indeed doable w/plenum off). The due to the hard lines, if I put the hard line into the manifold I then couldn't get the damn bolts into the EGR to the block! Just wouldn't line up. Tryed to put the bolts in the EGR first but then I couldnt screw in the fitting to the manifold, and almost threaded it multiple times! Ontop of that, I dropped my 10mm ontop of the Trans bell housing and then rolled back to to top of the trans! So then the job turned into trying to get to it. Starter motor off, shields off, trans dip stick off the lot... But still couldn't get to-or even see it! Made a bet that it should come out when I go for a drive... It did clunk, ting, ting, clank With Dads help on a bar we managed to get the bolts in... I was close to chucking it that day! Many choice words were said!
Sorry but all this because "it came with one so it must be better" earlier cars came with door mounted seatbelts - they were moved on later cars just like the EGR was removed on later models. I am not saying they did not do a job, but your post sounds like a lot of hassle for minimal return.
AusSpec's never came with came with those silly door mounted seat belts you are right with the "lots of effort with no gain" comment but there is no gain with leaving it off either... I have strong opinions of the EGR as most will know. So I'm not getting into it all again. You can search my threads if you like
I followed all your threads and was thinking as I posted that I was not after a rehash of them. I just found the comment quite Ironic given your opinions. I do however have the utmost respect for you to have stood your ground and after all the negative comments still have the ability to post about your hassles in a thread like this. My personal add to the list is - After obtaining my car for a nice low price having to install a bare engine sitting in the bay, with no real Z experience and none of the wiring or vacuum lines labeled. a bucket of bolts to put it together with - and the Aus300 CD that has all FSM etc on it. Took about 40 hrs of swearing cursing and fluffing around. This included a repull of the engine because the previous owner had hooked up the passenger side turbo oil feed with a bit of vacuum hose and cableties. that lasted all of 2 seconds on engine start before I had a huge pool of oil on the ground
Thanks mate. Yeah I know where you were coming from. Yeah I had my hassles but like almost everything on the Z there is bound to be hassles...just the nature of the beast. I should add however, I had removed the EGR with thoughts that I could reach the DET sensor  wrong! then followed the effort of putting it back in. Because I my beliefs of a "factory" running EGR system/tune.....I just had to "do the job"
The small heater hose right in the middle up between the engine and firewall. With the plenum and everything still intact. That day I bought a new tool. My beloved long reach long nose pliers. Crazy how many times I've used them for zed specific work. Also removing the 10mm bolt that holds the heater hard pipes together, for when replacing the core.
The hardest job I have ever done on a zed? Handing over cash to a zed guru after they have done the work for me. lol
Retrieving a washer from inside plenum grooves And Doing upper window slider bolt that snapped off with window still in car, only 2 clips were casualties
